New Leo Owner - Lighting question.

Hello- I am new to leopard geckos, and reptiles in general, but I recently (about 3 weeks ago) acquired my first leopard gecko. Her name is Nelly and from what I was told she is approximately 10 months old. she seems happy and healthy, nice fat tail. Hides most of the day but is very active in the night time. She eats well.. rotates between mealworms and crickets (dusted appropriately. Friendly and is great with handling.. Once my hand goes in the enclosure she climbs it to be taken out. My question is in regards to lighting. She is in an exo-terra large low aquarium. 36" Long by 18 inches deep and 12" tall. She is in a (finished) basement, so there really is no daytime light to speak of. I started using the regular room lights but my wife didnt want me keeping them on all day anymore.. So I purchased the reptisun T5 5.0 tube bulb fixture I believe theyre 24watts. Now I know Leopards supposedly dont really need UVB but also read somewhere this light was okay to use. Is this good to use for her in her enclosure? Does it sit too low being only a 12 inch tall tank? It is on top of the screen on the outside, but the few times I've seen her out while the light is on she does seem to squint a bit. Is there something better I could or should be using? I need some kind of light because the room is dark otherwise.

Thank you in advance for reading my question.

the reptile world is always changing, leopard geckos are shown to benifiet from UVB and UVA. if your leopard gecko is an albino than be careful because albino leos are sensitive to light.

Thanks for the reply. I do not believe she is an albino, but not positive on her morph. She is an orange(y) yellow color with black bands and an orange/white tail. I was just concerned that maybe the light was too close being only a 12 inch tall enclosure.. Looking for suggestions as what bulb would be best for her size enclosure.

Welcome aboard to you and Nelly! An Exo Terra 36 x 18 x 12 is a great enclosure for Nelly.

Let Nelly's response be your guide.

Screen top reduces effective UVB strength up to 50%.

Is your Reptisun T5 fixture 36 inches long? You might be better off with a shorter fixture. ShadeDweller lighting -- new from Arcadia lighting in 2018 -- is a 12 inch fixture. In the USA ShadeDweller lighting (207-588-7210) is available from LightYourReptiles.com Another option for Nelly's 36 inch long enclosure is Zoo Med's standard Reptisun 5.0 compact fluorescent UVB bulb, not the mini compact one, housed in a 10 inch diameter Fluker's dome lamp and placed on the warm end of the enclosure.

Since leos are crepuscular some keepers leave UVB on for a couple hours in the morning and a couple hours in late afternoon. An option for additional light is placing a floor or desk lamp on a timer.

When providing UVB for leos several things are important.
  • Before reducing powdered calcium with D3 lightly dusted @ 1 feeding per week, make sure Nelly is "basking" in her UVB rays regularly.
  • In addition to UVB light, Fran Baines, DVM, highly recommends a backup dose of powdered D3 @ 1 feeding per month.

The fixture is 24” and the bulb is 22”. I was thinking of swapping the bulb out for the Reptisun 5.0 T8 24” 17 watts which would work in the same fixture and according to zoo meds site this bulb is more suited for shade dwelling species and they even list the leopard gecko. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience with that particular bulb? If all else fails I don’t mind getting a floor lamp. Thank you!
