Hello!
I am planning on getting a leopard gecko within the next few weeks. I have made a plan of almost everything related to their care, I’ll type it out and if you suggest anything different/add ons please let me know!
Tank and heating:
I will be using a 20 gallon long aquarium with a mesh lid. For heating, I plan on using a zoomed reptitherm uth hooked up to the ipower digital heat mat thermostat on amazon set to 90 degrees, the cool side will be in the 70s. The temperature will be monitored with a digital thermostat/hygrometer with a probe from Amazon. A uvb light or any other lamp will not be provided.
Substrate and hides:
For substrate I will be using paper towels. I know they are not very natural but since I’ve never had a leopard gecko before, I feel like it will be an easier way to monitor the gecko and keep the tank clean. I plan on upgrading to slate later on and continuing to research loose substrate. I will provide a 2-way-exit hide with an open bottom over the heat mat, a diy humid hide with moist paper towels inside closer to the warm side, and a basic rock hide on the cool side. There will also be other fake plants for the gecko to explore and hide in throughout the tank.
Food and water:
Water treated with reptisafe will be provided in a bowl and refreshed daily. For live food, I will provide a variety of crickets (staple), mealworms, super worms/wax worms and dubia roaches eventually. I plan on purchasing my first feeders at petsmart/petco if my local exotics store doesn’t have any in stock. They will be gut loaded with fresh fruits/vegetables and proper food/cricket quencher for the crickets. I’ll keep the crickets in a separate critter keeper and move the mealworms to a larger ventilated bin. I have not yet constructed a feeding schedule but will do so once I find out what age gecko I buy (I plan on buying from a reputable exotics shop in my area, not petsmart or petco).
Supplements:
From my research, I have decided to feed zoomed repti calcium with d3, zoomed repti calcium without d3, and zoomed reptivite multivitamin. Calcium without d3 will be provided in a milk lid in the tank at all times. Calcium with d3 and the multivitamin will be provided through dustings of feeder insects.
Thank you for reading! If anything I said is not recommend or could be better please let me know, any help is appreciated.
