P. Grandis Attacked Mate Randomly?

Hi all,

I have a mated pair of P. Grandis for a little over a year now with no issues, until tonight while i was working in my office my male Grandis hucked himself across the enclosure and attacked my female Grandis who shared his cage [specifically a 24wx18x36h terrarium]. Female suffered ripped skin along her side, tip of tail and neck, i was able to get her out into a smaller enclosure for the time being 12x12x18 exo terra, but boy did it startle me and she seems okay, even ate once i relocated her. Still curious what could cause the "lovers" quarrel....

That being said,

I have read and I apologized if this was brought up before [ i searched but wasn't able to find anything on the topic], that most folks that keep Grandis in pairs, usually use a 18x18x24 tank, if I keep them separated from now on, could the 12x12x18 be capable of caring for a single adult? Just weighing my options if i should just bite the bullet and get the 18x18x24 tanks for each of them or if they'd be able to be healthy in their own individual 12x12x18s.

Thanks.

I don't have a lot of experience with day geckos, but, in my desire to keep a P. Grandis, I did research several times about enclosure size and each time I concluded that a 12x12x18 is too small. That said, it's probably a good size to keep the female until she heals. I have heard that day geckos can be difficult to keep together. When I was breeding I had a group of gargs that would be OK together 90% of the time but every now and then one would get bullied. A brief period of separation restored order, but gargs are a lot easier to move around than P. grandis.

Just to be better safe than sorry, I'd say keep her in the smaller one for now, but save up for an 18x18x24 and keep them separated on a permanent basis.
