leopard gecko feeding.

Hello! I recently have purchased a adult male leopard gecko. I have had him for around 3 days now I believe. He's been eating a little bit, he doesn't eat all the worms I try to give him but he ate around 4, 2 days ago. Now for my questions, I was wondering how often I should feed him and how many worms I should feed? I'm just a little bit confused because a lot of people say 2-3 times a week, or every other day. I also was wondering if I should dust them every time I feed? ... But other then that he seems to eat a bit. He might still be stressed out from the new environments but when I feed him sometimes he just seems like he's not very confident in himself when he hunts, he kinda looks like he's gonna eat it and then he doesn't? It's almost like he doesn't really seem them? Or like he's uninterested in them? But other then that he's ate around 4 so he's not completely not eating which is good! just hopefully someone can answer my questions! Sorry if I kinda went everywhere with this topic.

Sorry, I'm not sure how old he is! But I'm sure I can ask the people I got him from how old he is! I use Zoo Med Repti Calcium with D3 Reptile Supplement. I also use the same brand but without d3 in a bottle cap in his cage.

Please ask and then post here again.

ZM Repti Calcium with D3 is excellent! He only needs that @ 1 feeding per week. He also needs ZM Reptivite multivitamins withOUT D3 @ 1 other feeding per week. This place has good prices on those multivitamins.

Can you share a minute long video of your leo walking on some solid surface like a carpet?

If he's younger than 18 months old, I'll share a different schedule.

I just fed him so I'll try to get a video later tomorrow! But if I buy that vitamin stuff should I use that instead of my Zoo Med Repti Calcium without D3 Reptile Supplement?

I see that the vitamin stuff is for his bones and growth. I didn't know I had to buy that also because I thought the calcium was enough but I'll be order some of the vitamin stuff tomorrow. I'm not sure how long the shipping will take but will he be okay without the ZM Reptivite multivitamins withOUT D3 for about a week? I really don't want him to get MBD.

Good question. Please click on Schedule 126. You probably don't need plain calcium at all!

You'll need 2 supplements. Only 1 supplement should contain D3.

  1. Zoo Med's Repti Calcium with D3 (You have that.)
  2. Zoo Med's Reptivite multivitamins withOUT D3 (That's exactly what your leo still needs.)

He'll be fine. All the calcium + D3 hugely affects his bones.

Hope to get some feedback on how old he is.

I will be contacting them tomorrow to find out! :] thank you for all the help so far!
You're welcome!

Have you had an opportunity to make a minute-long video?

  1. Is he only eating mealworms?
  2. What bedding do you keep his mealworms on?
Let us know if you have other questions.

Your leo may be older than 12 months. What you use depends upon his age and health.

I don't really have a surface he can run on, I don't want him to run off because my house is pretty crowded with things. For now he has only been eating worms and I'm sorry I'm confused on what you mean bedding for the mealworms. Do you mean the bedding I have in the geckos tank? Also another side question, I bought the vitamins so when they get her, should I take the bottle cap I have of calcium without d3 out of his tank?

A carpet, floor, or bathtub might work for your video. Do you have someone to supervise while the other person takes the video?

Yes, wait until your Zoo Med's Reptivite multivitamins withOUT D3 arrives before you remove plain calcium from his enclosure. I'd also like age confirmation, before I ultimately recommend a supplement schedule.

Mealworm "bedding" = the substrate you keep the mealworms on. Mealworms eat their bedding. What mealworms eat is what makes them more or less healthy as food for your leo. Here's an inexpensive bedding for your mealworms. IF you're feeding just 1 leopard gecko, only buy the 1 pound size. After you receive it, put Professional Reptiles' Dry Diet into an airtight container.

Aliza (GU's acpart) uses this already ground dry diet from "Professional Reptiles" for her mealworm/superworm bedding as well as for her insect and worm food.

I'll take the video in a bath tub in the morning! I also asked them and they said the age would be in-between 18-24 months. I also am not completely sure what the bedding is! I get it from a pet store and it just looks yellow and like flakey?

I'm looking forward to your minute-long video. Start him at one end of the bathtub, so we have some uninterrupted walking. IF he seems to slip, lay something down like a dish towel or paper towels for him to walk on. :)

Based upon their reported age of 18-24 months old and his size, I recommend Schedule 126 below. Mealworms can be substituted for crickets and dubia. Variety is best. Sometimes leos get bored with one type feeder all the time.

Please phone the pet store and ask the name of the bedding. We are what we eat.

Weekly Schedule 126 for Leopard Geckos 18 months old +
(withOUT UVB)
Metabolic bone disease (MBD) symptoms include uneven (lopsided) gait, walking on one or both "elbows", bowed limbs, belly dragging, and an underbite. Difficulty chewing should be closely monitored.
The Reptile Supply Company based in Lodi, California stocks Zoo Med's ReptiVite multivitamins withOUT D3.

  • Monday > > crickets or dubia lightly dusted with Zoo Med's Repti Calcium with D3
  • Thursday > > crickets or dubia lightly dusted with Zoo Med's ReptiVite multivitamins withOUT D3
  • Saturday > > Optional: mealworms, superworms, or black soldier fly larvae (Phoenix worms) > > no dusting
