Dimming thermostat that doesn’t break the bank.

Hi! I’m looking for dimming thermostats for three heat lamps. I have three Leos and I want to use either a halogen or a dhp. Which both work better with dimming. Does anyone know of some options that won’t break the bank? Any options would be great! Any Halogen suggests would be nice to.

Hi ~

Are your 3 enclosures the same size? What are their dimensions?

Using halogen bulbs is trial and error. It all depends upon the sizes of your enclosures as well as your room temps during the night. Using either a 50 watt or 80 watt DHP depends on those things too.

IF your room temps stay @ 65*F & above, it's safe to turn off ALL enclosure heat during the night. IF your room temps dip below 65*F @ night, you'd need a night heat source as well.

Many leos ultimately adapt to UVB. Some never do.

DHPs can be used with UVB. Then supply daily ambient light with a 15 watt incandescent in a Fluker's 5.5 inch dome. DHPs can be used with ON/OFF (non-proportional) thermostats.

Have you researched Herpstat's proportional thermostats? See whether a Herpstat is available that accepts 3 devices IF set to the same temperature.

They are all 40 gallon breeders
I was planning on using heat emitters at night.
Thanks for the info!
You're welcome. I don't know any substitutes for a Herpstat dimming thermostat except an ON/OFF thermostat. You might consider naturalistic enclosures first.

For ~36 x 18 x 18 inch enclosures, Arcadia's 12 inch ShadeDweller UVB tubes & fixtures are perfect. UVB fixtures should ONLY span 1/3 to 1/2 an enclosure's length. Please use tube UVB rather than compact fluorescent bulb UVB.

EDIT: On the 6 July 2022 I discovered from an extremely reliable source that the directions on Arcadia's CURRENT ProT5 UVB kit - 7% UVB box (Arcadia's 12 inch ShadeDweller tube + fixture box) are incorrect!

I don't know whether Arcadia has taken steps to correct that error.

Create a 70% topsoil/30% play sand substrate about 3-4 inches deep.

A dimming (proportional) thermostat might allow you to choose different temperatures at night for a DHP.

Place the ShadeDweller & bulb (or DHP) just like this.

Do you have the brand name? Is the mesh top the same brand?
