Leopard Gecko Rex: Bad Shedding

lol I have that zilla thing that came with a kit along time ago in the incubator for humidity readings. Sometimes you have to tap it a few times to get the dial to move again lol. If it doesn't move at all then it's definitely busted.

You aren't testing the floor temperature with that thing right?

Maybe it's too hot or cold under the hide?

Honestly mine have never fell asleep out in the open. Sleeping secure is very important to them. I do believe it's due to lack of temperature options in their hides. This is why what works for one may not work for all and advice must be given carefully Jen. Okay enough, it's off topic.

X0 invest in a better quality humidity gauge. It can prevent future headaches.

Ok so having the repticarpet under the slate definitely helped the heat on the floor go down, I measured this morning it was 90 degrees. but in the meantime I am ordering the thermostat. And keeping the curtains down. I thought I was right about keeping their tanks on the dark side, I definitely don't want them to lose their eyesight :(
I tried to take the humidity in other parts of the tank but I think the darn thing is broken because it isnt moving at all it remains at 50% and the temp is definitely reading wrong from it! ugh. It is this product below. I am 2 seconds away from throwing it in the garbage.

I am having bad luck with things breaking lately :(

The dial-type thermometer/hygrometer that you show is unreliable. Don't understand why Zilla even markets them. Perhaps you can return it if you just bought the kit?

Radio Shack (and Taylor) both sell reliable thermo/hygro for reasonable prices. That is what I recommend :). To get a floor temp, just lay the digital down.

Leos need some access to daylight for their day/night cycle. Never direct sunlight which can fatally increase tank temperatures. What is recommended is window light from a distance.

I just tried to check the temps again= you will not believe it, the dam heat mat is busted!! ugh!! wtf!!! %*$&%^ Now Im pissed! i JUST bought that thing less then a month ago!!
I just cant seem to keep things working around here and I am having bad luck.
I have a temp gun for the floor temps, its reading at 85 on his warm side without a heat mat now..:(
That humidity gauge was trashed today, Im just going to have to get better quality. I used that t read the air temps but now that I think of it the humidity always remained at 50.
Poor Rex now, all this crap and the changes is probably stressing him out.
Both of them are currently sleeping in their cool hides, Im glad this happened in the summer time when it is warm instead of winter time when its cold.
OK now I think I need to buy some of that heat tape someone recommend to me. there is no chance of it shorting out then.
Seriously= at this point I would just like to pay a professional to come hook everything up right. So frustrating!!!!

So sorry that you are having all this trouble. Glad, too, that it IS summer. 85 F is not bad for the warm side floor. Got a PE-2 temp gun in Spring 2011 right before Pro Exotics had their terrible fire.

If you cover the air fare, I might come to New Jersey . However, I hear that it has been super hot there this summer. Seriously, though, I have never used heat tape and am not handy at all with things electrical :(.

ok went to the fleamarket today and found a rheostat!! and a heat mat, good prices on both. It had dual power so I hooked both of their heat mats to it. Nice :) Its on medium and the floor is now 90 degrees. :) Im super happy about finding that and being able to control them now. should i turn it down some or is 90 good?
the old heat mat actually looked MELTED. i think it was a malfunction.
sadly they did not have a humidity gauge. I will check radio shack this week.

Great finds!!! (Sounds like you meant a thermostat?)

I keep my leopard gecko thermostat set at 93 F.

How are you doing with temps on the cool end?

yes it is thermostat i meant, it is labeled as rheostat thats weird!
cool side shows 80 degrees. its hot in there. I keep the ac and fans on in here. and I def make sure they have cool water. summer is brutal here right now!!

That's a rheostat, equivalent of a light dimmer pretty much. I don't usually recommend rheostats because they don't monitor the temperature, you still have to do it yourself. It does not shutoff your UTH if temperature gets too hot. So say one day for some reason your room got very hot, the tank got extremely hot, or your UTH malfunctions, the rheostat will not shut it off to adjust the temperature. You have to manually dial it down.

Thermostats will monitor the temperature and keep it within what you set it to, and shut it off if things get too hot. It's a bit more peace of mind in my opinion.

But having a rheostat is better than having nothing at all.

oh brother, it figures with my luck I would get the wrong thing. LOL
thanks for your info, I am going to continue trying to get things right once and for all. I monitor the temps daily and i think the rheostat is doing a good job dimming the heat pads down.

i also love taking the temps for them because they attack the red dot from the laser gun, lol i think its cute :)

Hey,

Just want to mention this about your comment above. My motto is to be safe rather than sorry :).

My PE-2 temperature gun came with this warning: "When the PE-2 is in use, do not look directly into the laser beam-Permanent eye damage may result.......Never point the laser towards anyone's eyes."
