Anyway I can contact someone to help?

Today I went by local Petco and was outraged by the conditions I saw their reptiles in. 15 leopard geckos in one cage, crested geckos with floppy tail, no branches or foliage, and snakes squirming like their dying. Multiple beardies to one cage, of all sizes. Iguanas with stuck shed. And much more... Anyone know of someone I can contact to file complaints? Our local Petco is very very bad in pet care standards. Thank you.

As horrible the conditions of these large chain petstores may be, one person complaining wont do nothing :( These stores have millions of customers and I don't see any change happening as for the care of their animals. Like I said, as horrible as it is, they don't care, they need to make money and they don't care how they do it. It's as if these animals aren't living and breathing creatures and just "inventory".

I take it you still go to this Petco though? If their animal practices are so poor then why continue going and adding to their business? :(

I really don't know a way to contact them, we only have pet smart in Canada but I'm assuming its pretty much the same.

Merissa ~

Can you take photos of what you saw?

I would initially file a complaint with the corporate Petco headquarters with a copy to the manager of the particular store. See how responsive your particular store is. Depending, you might also wish to contact a local animal welfare group.

I normally do not shop there but today I went in because I was at another store in the shopping center. I was horrified! I really want to purchase the female crested with the floppy tail, poor thing needs help. However that would be supporting their business. I normally shop at petsmart, our local vivarium and mom/pop shops. I sent an email to HQ and hopefully I hear back. I'm going to see if I can find a local rescue or organization to back me up.

Good on you Merrisa :) Props!

I'm not going to stick up for any of these chain stores, but here in CA., petsmart is much better than Petco. I just can't help thinking about that poor crestie though... :(

Would me buying that crested be bad, or would it count as saving it?

That's a tough one Merrisa... It all depends on your values I suppose. Possibly save this gecko and provide it with a long healthy life while still paying for it and contributing and encouraging these pet-stores to continue with same poor care technics.
It's all up to you I guess.. Just remember that you can't save every animal.

I would ask them if they would let you have that crestie as a rescue for free. Paying money is indeed supporting them, that's why I would advise against it. It gives them reasons to keep doing what they're doing. They can pretend to want to make changes, but with money coming in, corporations have little incentives to make changes. Their sole purpose is to make money, so the only way they would change is if money stops coming in.

I will say that these stores (petco/petsmart) are often independently owned franchises, so you can find a store owned by a good owner with caring staff. But too often you find stores that just don't care much about the animal's well-being, and they hire minimum wage employees with no knowledge to save money. The local petco here used to be fairly well run. But the ownership changed hands not long ago, I saw their quality went way down, they started not staffing enough people, and the place is a mess now. I stopped going there for good since a year ago.

I would encourage you NOT to contact a local animal welfare group. I spent several years working closely with a herp society that was also a rescue, and this problem/question comes up again and again (unfortunately for the animals).

animal welfare groups can't do anything to help.

IF they are breaking local laws, turn them into the police. take pictures; document everything that you can. you can bring this information to local news outlets, too, but be careful to keep your account 100% factual or you could be guilty of libel.

unfortunately, in most places, it's not illegal to abuse reptiles :(

I hate to be so gloom and doom, but realistically it's difficult to make a dent. you may be lucky regarding the local laws, and may actually be able to get somewhere by contacting the local authorities. herp societies and rescue groups have no ability to enforce laws, and often (sadly) don't know the laws well in their areas anyways.

Thank you Aimless. I think I'm just going to try going straight through the store management as well as Petco's HQ. I sadly don't have room to take in the crested and I know if I did it would upset my family. Hopefully somebody that has knowledge of their care will purchase her and give her a good life.

Just an update. Got in contact with the manager as was told that their care is up to code by Petco given standards. And they are told what to put in the cages. That there isn't much they can do.

^exactly. your only recourse is if local (or state) animal cruelty laws can help. some individual box chains can be good, if there's a manager of the reptile area who cares enough to buck the system a little. otherwise, often the condition of their husbandry is just appalling.

I can't go into most petstores that sell herps. I just can't do it. it's too hard to leave them there, and I can't save them all :(

Yeah it's very upsetting. My local petsmart is good with their reptiles and small animals, just depends on the store and managers/employees. However it still could improve. I will shop at petsmart if needed, but I like to give my business to the local vivarium shop we have or some mom and pop stores.

I like amazon. you can find tons of herp stuff, usually cheaper, and they don't sell animals :)

I have lived with this same nightmare for a long time. I had to watch a beautiful Tokay gecko slowly suffer and eventually pass away. it still breaks my heart! i go to a mom and pop store for crickets ONLY and all other insects I order online from reputable sources, The next animal/reptile I get will ONLY be from a reputable breeder. I rescued an emaciated shed stuck missing 4 toes leo -Rex- from an overcrowded tank and spent a fortune nursing him back to health, although i adore him so much i dont regret it, it was a lesson learned when I found so many other worse off ill geckos took his place. :*( Cant save them all although I wish I could.
I just cant bear to see them in those conditions it is hearty wrenching. Maybe write the pet store a letter and give them some husbandry tips as well.

Here in the SF Bay Area in CA we have a place called the East Bay Vivarium, Elizabeth's familiar with it. They sell hundreds of species and to work there you practically have to be a herp expert. I have been there numerous times and can say everything is constantly up to par. The tanks are tailored to each species and has everything they need and more. I have no complaints and they have amazing reviews. While they are more expensive, your money is well worth it. That's where I've gotten one of our two geckos and will continue to go. They drill you on your knowledge of care before letting you buy an animal and are very good at teaching about them as well. As for feeders, I get them from petsmart or my local feed store. I love amazon and eBay! Get some great deals! As for all my other animals I'll continue to get them from shelters and rescues. It's just sad how some places don't seem to care, it's all about the money for these chain stores. :(

That sounds like such an awesome place! if I am ever on the west coast I will have to check it out! :)
I should ammend my previous comment; I would def adopt from shelters/rescues again in the future, but only if I have the proper resources/money to do so! But I refuse to rescue anything from a pet store again. :( It is only encouraging them and I want to protest against them
