I have a young standings day gecko in an exo terra 12 by 12 by 18. I was just wondering which reptisun CFL bulb would work best for this species.

I can only tell you that I have mine under a Zilla UVB and heat unit (~$24 at Petco). I use the Zoo Med ReptiSun Tropical Compact Fluorescent UVB (5.0)Lamp and Zilla Mini Halogen White Day Bulb, 25 Watts. In combination with my other lighting, it keeps a temperature gradient from 100+ to 78 degrees in my 24x18x18 exoterra. My little guys are happily making love.......it must be working:).

In regards to your other concerns about eating and tail loss, I have a question.....What is your tank set-up?
If your little guy is unhappy, he/she will go off its feed. My little guys have lot of vegetation and crevices into which they disappear when alarmed. Over time they have become much bolder and are thus more visible. I am of the opinion that a planted tank makes them much happier. I want them in as natural an environment as possible with ABG soil as a base for planting and to sustain fungi, springtails, etc. I make them hunt for insects, Pangea diet is in fixed locations. They get as wide of a variety of foods as I can manage.

In regards to the tail. There is a general rule of nature; if the head can fit through a hole, the body will also. Geckos are very flexible....if any doubt, watch a video of geckos hatching. Amazing stuff! The really cool part is the tail will regrow!

I would post a picture but I don't know how xD I'm such a noob. The enclosure has quite a few places to hide along with several live plants and bamboo that i wedged in horizontally across the enclosure. He is very active when I'm gone, but the instant I enter my room he dives for the bamboo hollow and stays there until I leave. I also think he is eating a little bit because I put crickets in his enclosure but many of them mysteryously disappear. Also, you said you have a reptisun 5.0, what wattage is it? And what day gecko species do you have?

I think that he is being shy, my Lined-Geckos are pretty skittish by nature and will dive for cover when the mister comes on....6 pm is always entertaining. Right now I am happy to be able to add food, without total panic. They have become confident with normal movements in the room, people that they know they ignore when they move. Strangers.....they are more skeptical! I would have in an area where they see people, but have some space. Mine are in my brothers bedroom, in a corner. There is not a lot of room between the bed and the designated "tank rack", so it gets traffic only by design and only once or twice a day. They busily go about their day unmolested. They actually like to watch us from a distance.

The bulb is a 26 watt cfl

sorry i accidentally posted twice

Mission accomplished, you uploaded a photo.

Maybe get half a cork round and prop it in the corner, stick a miniture phalaenpsis orchid to it. You can often get them for $3 at a lowes bargain rack, just make sure that it shows healthy white roots. Pull it from the 'pot of death' and strap it to the cork, on a pillow of sphagmun, with fishing line or floral wire. The orchid will be in heaven, the gecko will have a new hide, and the tank will hold more interest.

I could do that, but this is just a temporary enclosure, once i get a new cage for my crested gecko, ill move him to the old one, which is 18 by 18 by 24, i think all of that extra space will lower his stress a bit.
