Feeding a new Crested Gecko?

So I bought my first Crestie at a reptile show yesterday, and he's absolutely adorable. He is a juvie, though I'm not sure on weight because I do not have a scale (Though he is my 4th reptile now, as I also have a fat tail gecko, california king snake, and a ball python, where would I be able to find a cheap scale and how much would one cost?). He is showing no interest in food (Both last night and tonight) and I'm a little bothered but from what I've read I'm not completely worried.

I've got Repashy complete diet for him, which is what the breeder I bought him from was feeding him. So far I've been offering him a bit of Repashy on a q-tip, and when he doesn't show interest in it I tried putting some on the tip of his nose to get him to lick it off as I've seen recommended on forums, but he just backs away from it. I also tried to entice him with a cricket tonight, but that didn't work either. I've got a juice cap with some Repashy sitting in his cage as well, which I suppose there's a chance he's eating, but I still would like to double check a couple things.

The main question is, should I continue to try and feed him each night until he eats, or would it be better to not stress him with it? Is the q-tip method the best or is there something else I could/should try?

Another question I'm curious about; how long should I leave the same dish of Repashy in there for him? Does it go bad? I've got a small container's worth of it sitting in my fridge for whenever I need to refill his dish, but I definitely don't want it to sit in there and go bad because he's not eating it, thus leaving that much less of a reason for him to eat.

Here is a terrible picture that was taken with my camera phone, it just doesn't do him justice at all!

He's currently in an 8 gallon tall glass tank (It's as tall as a 10 gallon, but not as long) with some fake pothos and a bendy vine, as well as a hide at the bottom of the cage, with Fluker's terrarium moss as the substrate. I don't have any pictures of his current set-up, though I will try and get some soon.

Also if anyone has any beginner tips that they think I'd find useful I'd greatly appreciate it. I've done research on cresteds before, and continue to do so, but more help is always a good thing!

Wow this post got out of hand. I may have rambled a bit, and I apologize for that.

Put a small amount of CGD in a dish in the cage and change it every other day. Put a few small crickets in there. Just keep offering and don't worry if it looks as if he's not eating. Juvies tend to prefer crickets but eventually you'll notice CGD footprints on the sides of the cage.

I do it and my gecko is fine. The crickets will likely eat some of the CGD so they won't bother the gecko.

Hi there,

Congrats on the new gecko! You can pick up scales at places that sell kitchen supplies or you can order online through ebay or other sites if you google scales or what not. I'm sure some breeders offer them as well so just ask around.

Since you only got him a few days ago/yesterday, you might want to keep traffic about the cage minimal. He/she is already stressed out from the travel from breeder to your home so its best to not add more stress than it needs. So just put in food, mist, and observe. Try to keep handling to a minimum.

And as for leaving crickets in the cage...I wouldn't exactly advise it even if there is cgd left in the cage. The loose crickets can crawl all over him/her and it'll just stress him/her out especially when he/she is trying to get some sleep.

I'm not sure who told you to use a q tip but that doesnt strike me as the best method

as others said he is probably stressed because of the travel and then you shoving a q tip in his face and putting food on his face etc

just put some cgd in there , and leave him be for a week .. change the cgd every 3 days but other than that and misting just leave him be

he will not starve himself , he will eventually eat

also keep in mind that crested geckos eat very little cgd most of the time and you usually can't even tell they have eaten any.

I also think that leaving a few crickets in there is fine. Some cresties dont like to eat when people are around , one of mine likes to eat in the middle of the night and only with the lights off

Alright, thanks for the assurance guys! I can't wait for this first week to get over with... He's so cute I can barely stand not being able to hold him!

the first week is just an approximate idea of how long

observe him after a week and be sure that he is eating
there is poop
he isnt acting funny
doesnt look like he is losing alot of weight

Yeah, I'm sure. I will do my best to make sure that he is healthy and not stressed, I'm just saying that it's going to be a long settling in period lol.

Feeding Infant Crestie??

My daughters lil dino (1 month old) had his first cricket 2nite. I dropped 3 in the tank dusted with powder. He jumped on one right away. The other 2 crawled around for a while...went back in the tank and hes on the carpet..hes never on the carpet..had him 2 weeks and he hangs on the fake plants at the top... i added a potato slice for the cricks and gave him fresh CGD and spring water.

Ive read some posts here and am wondering should i be feeding him or let him hunt on his own?

btw he is eating regularly he has a special branch for feces...any tips on cleaning...i use water with paper towel

what do you mean should you be feeding him ?

How long have you had it?

Did you read the other posts stating that sometimes it takes cresties a while to settle and start to eat?

If he is eating cgd then it really doesnt matter if he eats the crickets or not

i mean feeding him crickets with tongs instead of dropping them in the tank and letting him hunt on his own.
I brought him 2 weeks ago and he is now about a month and a half old.
I have read the other posts about taking a while and even though he doesn't need cricks is it too early to start him on a balanced diet?

thanks is advance for your input

if he isnt hunting them on his own he doesnt want them

CGD is a complete diet and crickets are not neccessary.

Try rotating with fruit mash every other feeding instead of cgd if you want him to have something different
