Rarest Leopard Geckos...

I got two new special babies today!!! These days, these are more rare than pretty much any of the morphs out there. Both of these babies are true, normal/wild types.

Now, I know you're thinking, "well, I've seen normal leos before. They're not that rare".

BUT...almost all "normals" these days have SOME designer genetics in them even if you don't know for sure which ones. However, these two come from parents that were born in the late 1980's!!! Way before the first albino (or any other designer) had even been produced. Thus, these babies have ZERO designer genes!!! They are het for absolutely NOTHING!!! Now that's rare these days indeed. Pure, unmucked, old school genetics. I'm very excited to see how these two turn out. I also can't wait to see what sex they turn out to be as they were incubated in situ. So, there's no way to know what sex they are from TSD. Thanks so much to Chip for the hook up.

Anyway, on to the pictures...

This one has a cool X on it's head right between it's eyes!

This is the second baby...

SMILE!!! :nana:

Hope everyone enjoys these. I'll post more pics of them down the road as their patterns start to change.

its great to see ''normal'' ones!!
my old leo who unfortuantly died last year was a true ''normal'' she was stunning, very different to what you get nowerdays!

aw!
Congrats!
I LOVE normals!

I have 12 normal hatchlings right now that are not het for a single thing.
Mine don't date back as far as yours do. Mine only date back to 2001.

*ETA*:
Actually, the father of my hatchlings is high yellow and the mothers are normals.
But whenever I ask anyone what that makes my hatchlings, I only get the answer that normals and high yellows are the same thing.
But technically, they are not.

I'm glad to learn that there is such an appreciation for non-designer leopards. I told Ethan I have been giving these babies away for years. I stopped incubating the eggs years ago as well because I was tired of trying to place all of the babies. Now I just raise what hatches in the substrate, secretly hoping every time that none of the eggs will not survive so that I will not have to deal with the hatchlings. Anyway, next year if there is still an interest I will start incubating again so that there will be more available.

Ah yes, they really are gems, beautiful geckos.

I'm old school too when it comes to leopards. I've got a few from 1997, before even albinos showed up, as well as some F1. (Does anyone remember The Golden Gecko? They had some F1, clean genes made it worth the import hassle.)

Even though I like patternless and tangs, there's nothing like a spotted leo to get me drooling.

When I see some of the genetic monstrosities being churned out nowadays, my head spins. It makes me want to hug my Plain Janes, makes me appreciated them even more.

I couldn't agree more.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I have a RS Tremper arriving on Tuesday, and a Tang Enigma being dropped off on Wednesday, and they're absolutely striking animals, but normals/high yellows are the best.

I've noticed that my normal and high yellow leos adjust better to change than any of my other leos. They also eat the best.

What I find sad (and kind of scary) is that it truely is becoming near impossible to find real wild type leos with no designer genetics. And that's happened in the span of less than 15 years. There are no more wild caught leos coming in to the U.S. So it's up to us to preserve the gene pool that we have. It really would be a shame to see a day when there simply were no "normal" leos in captivity any more. So, I'm on a mission now to keep the clean genetics as clean as I can. Now I just need to find a few more specimens that I can be sure are free of designer genetics so that I can establish a viable breeding colony of unrelated animals.

@ Hilde - I remember "The Golden Gecko"! They were huge back in the day. I wonder what became of them. Like many breeders, they just kind of fell off the map.

@ Chip - I'm sure that you'll never have a problem finding homes for your baby leos here at GU. There's a lot of purists that would love to have real wild type leos. And even for the non-purist, just having clean bloodlines to breed into the morphs is a blessing.

@ everyone else - Thanks for all the compliments. Chip is the one that really deserves them though. He produced these guys and hooked me up with them. I just took the pictures.

Most off my leo's are wildtype. True own experience I've found out that they are more healthy and long living than any off the morphs.
One off my older females is, what I call, 'a natural snow'. Not bred this way, but just a variation in the normal pattern.
I love your pure babies, Ethan!! Good luck with them!!
Kind regards,

Cindy

I had a NORMAL leopard gecko. One hundred percent pure bred wild. I know that she is wild because he was cought in India and shipped to the united states! I got rid of her though, because she had a really bad eating and temper broblem.

I currently have 3 "old" normal babies. I got all three from a gentleman that has an 8 year old pair. When he found the first one in the viv, I immediately said pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase ! And that was MoMo... Then he found a second... Saddleback Pooper... Now the third, Leonine ;) She is the one in my introduction that looks to be winking :D
I always have room for unwanted babies... I even still have unused tanks sitting out in the shed out back.. Wouldn't take me but an hour to afix in the tiles, and get everything set for a new comer ;)

Gotta love babies :D

Too bad my girls are past breeding, but they do have some kids out there somewhere. Hopefully they're being used to clean the gene pool.
I've actually named one female Chlorina and a male Bleacher. ;)

I didn't mean to ignore Chip, just forgot. Keep the project rolling, it's important. The way I see it, in a few years when the designers start to self-destruct, the plain ones will be back in fashion.

Yes they are the most beautiful leos.
I'll post some pictures of my own hatchlings in a few days.
Some are "jungle like" due to the fluctuation of the temperature.
