Highest wattage light bulb you can use?

Like Allee mentioned, the temps should stabilize after a number of hours.
Make sure, if you use the above lighting, that you check the temps several times in this 12 hour period as you don't want the temps to be over the 96-97 degrees. If it is, move the light farther away.
Also, realize that under the tank heat is better for young leos and that you will need a cool area as well as the warm area in the tank.

The light I have now is like 50 watts, and the highest the tank ever gets is 83(which I know is really low) and I meant to get a 60 watt, but ended up grabbing a 75 watt

If the new bulb is only somewhat too strong it can very simply be plugged into a Lutron dimmer ($10-$15 at Lowe's). Then with the slider on the dimmer you can tweak the temperature. That really works. I use it myself on my 20 gallon long leo tank.
