This is my Leo's set-up. I'm planning on creating her a more naturalistic enclosure soon but I just have to plan it out and get supplies first. Plus I need to find a cheap temporary enclosure for her to live in, in the mean time.

My Leo's Setup

Hey all,

I'm sort of new to the leopard gecko scene. I bought this gecko three months ago for a class pet (I'm a fourth grade teacher). I have already learned alot along the way.

Let me know what you think of my setup and what I could do to improve it.

Thanks!
TP

It's called a Ultimate rock Climbable Reptile Background.

I bought it from bigappleherps.com

They're pretty expensive, but for a 20 gallon long it was only 46 dollars, and I felt it would add a lot to the enclosure so I went for it.

My gecko loves it. It takes up a little room in the tank, but it adds a lot of area for the gecko to climb, and chase crickets.

That's pretty cool, when i get my Leo a 20 gallon I'm definitely going to get her this :D

Thanks for sharing Tony. Nice to hear that you went with a 20 gallon LONG and a tile substrate!

Just curious. How far up will he climb?

Have you a weight? Judging from the pictures you may wish to cut back on number of feedings per week or amount per feeding.

There are a few things I would add. A single leo should have 3 hides. Does he have a temperature gradient from warm to cool? What type of calcium and vitamins are you supplying?

Please check out the thorough Leo Guidelines linked in my signature right belowfor further ideas.

Elizabeth,

The left side is the warm side. I am using a heat mat with a thermostat that keeps the tile between 88-92. I also use a ceramic heat emitter on that side to keep the air temp between 83-87. The right side of the enclosure stays pretty close to room temp. As far as calcium, I am using calcium carbonate powder in the dish, and dusting either the crickets or mealworms I feed her with miner-all indoor 3x per week when feeding. The moist hide on the left side has moistened Eco-earth coconut fiber inside. She spends most of her time in there. She loves it. I appreciate the feedback. I will try to find some type of hide to place in the tank. In the middle? Is that where I should put it? The 3d background takes up some of the floor space and I felt it would be pretty crowded if I added a third hide.

Oh, and she doesn't like the light I had on in the pictures. I only turn it on if I want to take a picture or if my students want to watch her feed. Otherwise, I just keep it off.

Thanks!

So do you have both heat sources on at night? In my experience working in schools, rooms can get pretty cool after the kids leave.

A ceramic heat emitter above should not bother her at all since it only supplies heat.

Two hides generally are placed on the warm end: the warm dry hide and the warm moist hide.

Does she climb all over that backdrop or just on the lower levels as pictured?

Yes, the heat sources stay on 24/7. My room will get pretty cool in the winter at night, but I went with a 100w ceramic heat emitter, which doesn't run that often during the day. I figured it would be powerful enough to keep it warm at night if the temp gets low in the room. The school's heating system allows the temp to drop to 58 at night in the winter.

She climbs all over that background. She especially likes the lower left ledge under the heater, and the ledge on the right side half way up. I do find her all the way at the top from time to time, and she loves to chase crickets on the wall. They think they can hide from her at the top of the wall, but she will go after them. My students love to watch it.

I need to find another hide for the warm side that fits the motif. I am wondering if I could go to a smaller water dish to make more room?

Good idea---go with a smaller water dish---maybe half the size of the one pictured.

Nice to hear that she makes full use of the backdrop. Wish that my mature female leo would climb so.
