Good idea---go with a smaller water dish---maybe half the size of the one pictured.

Nice to hear that she makes full use of the backdrop. Wish that my mature female leo would climb so.

My girl was born just this past April, and is just now starting to get some size to her. I haven't weighed her lately, but she still has a bit of room to grow yet.

I will go to a smaller water dish, and put another hide on the warm side.

Any other suggestions? And can you help me figure out what morph she is? I'm thinking just a high yellow, but I'm no expert...

You seem to have the other bases well-covered. Glad that you have a thermostat too.

Have you found the thermometer stuck on the left wall to be accurate?

The calcium carbonate could be placed in a small bottlecap and not the "huge" dish as pictured.

How long ago did you post on the morph thread? Just really don't know the morphs :-(.

That's the trouble with "average" dial thermometers...not very accurate. Have you checked the temps with say a digital thermometer, even to verify your thermostat's setting? I have several digitals from Radio Shack that I like.

I have a temp gun coming from amazon. It is the one that you recommended on your guidelines page. It should be coming in a couple of days. When reading your recommendations, it sounded like it might be a good idea to make sure the temps are accurate. Better safe than sorry...

Only downside I see is how noisy classes can become at times. Maybe you could post a small sign which says "Hospital Zone...quiet please." Humm-mm-m.

Thanks! I did a lot of reading beforehand, and spent some time this summer reading forums and such. Then saved up a little cash and started acquiring some things. I also had my students research Leo's and we talked about what we needed for the gecko in class. I made sure to explain that taking on a pet is not a decision to take lightly. We must make sure we have what we need to properly take care of the pet before we get the pet. I think they have learned a lot in the process, and to be honest, that was the point...

It does get noisy at times, but there are very specific rules regarding the Leo. No touching the terrarium, tapping on glass, and that area of the classroom is an inside voice zone. The students love her!

There has been some debate regarding a name, but it hasn't been decided as of yet. The most popular choice so far has been Jamaica, but there is a girl in the other fourth grade class with that name, so I'm not sure I will allow it. Her name is TBD at this point.

Good wishes naming her. ("Jamaica Farewell"...know that song?)

At the time I adopted my leo pair from two brothers who no longer wanted them, I had kindergarteners name them. They chose Rocky for the male and Cha cha cha (Cha for short) for the female. They did have a single hatching I raised to 5 mo and sold to a 7 yo and his mom. Still have Cha.

Unfortunately, the young leo died an early death at 5 yo.

Hey all,

I'm sort of new to the leopard gecko scene. I bought this gecko three months ago for a class pet (I'm a fourth grade teacher). I have already learned alot along the way.

Let me know what you think of my setup and what I could do to improve it.

It's called a Ultimate rock Climbable Reptile Background.

I bought it from bigappleherps.com

They're pretty expensive, but for a 20 gallon long it was only 46 dollars, and I felt it would add a lot to the enclosure so I went for it.

My gecko loves it. It takes up a little room in the tank, but it adds a lot of area for the gecko to climb, and chase crickets.

The background is made from some type of flexible material, could be silicone or rubber, and has been faced with gritty sand and painted. It feels like real rock, and provides the gecko with a very realistic climbing surface. I secure it to the back of the tank with industrial velcro. It is super easy to remove for cleaning, and can simply be rinsed off in the sink. It also allows for wires to be ran behind it for probes and such, keeping those out of the way.
