hi!

just a noob leopard gecko owner. I have bought a 10 months old male leopard gecko, I'm using an old aquarium about 5 or 6 gallons (I know its not big enough), so with a limited space, I can only put 1 hide inside. Just wanna ask, which is more important for the gecko a humid hide or a dry hide?

PS: I live in philippines which is a tropical country, so our temp usually 89 to 95 everyday.

thanks!

Not sure what size a 5 or 6 gallons looks like but I`d have the hide in the cool end if that even plausible.... you must be able to find a wooden/ carboard/plastic box, try the back of a shop. They don`t need to much space mate. Two take away tubes make great wee hides. One with some moss and the other just as it is.

Good luck with the wee fella & welcome :)

First of all, you should get a 10-20 gallon tank ASAP. And I would say use 2 small hides so you can have both.

All 3 hides are equally important so that your leo can move from one to the other depending upon what he needs at the moment: warm dry hide, warm moist hide, and cool dry hide.

Please share a picture of your leo. Generally at 10 months old leopard geckos are approaching adult size. A considerably larger tank is highly recommended in order to establish a good thermal gradient.

Temperatures for all leos regardless of size:
88-93 F (31-34 C) ground temp at warm end inside the warm dry hide
no greater than 85 F (29.5 C) air temp - 4 inches above ground on the warm end
no greater than 75 F (24.5 C) air temp - 4 inches above ground on the cool end

Leave the UTH on 24/7. Can turn off overhead heating at night.

here's a photo of my current setup.

as you can see, only 1 hide will fit in there, currently I have dry hide inside and planning to put in just a humid hide. will that be ok? hopefully soon I'll transfer him to a larger enclosure.

thanks!

Hi Wolper, the hide you have could be smaller, they like to be snug in their hides, if you could replace the big hide for two coconut shells or similar size hides 4068.jpg The Exo Terra worm dish could be replaced by another hide similar to the coconut size for a moist hide. Just drop the meal worms on the floor for him to hunt down or hand feed him.

These simple changes would make a big difference to the wee fella until you get a bigger enclosure.

He is a beautiful Leo bud and will appreciate your trying your best for him.

Remember to dust his food a couple of times a week, he really needs that too.

I`v seen myself going up the woods for some falling bark, if you do this, oven bake to dry ( if needed ) and soak with 10% disinfectant 90% water then dry out again.

Take care bud :)

Definitely upgrade as soon as you can! It'll be a much happier gecko. As for hides, you can make them smaller they like smaller places it makes them feel more secure. Also a smaller bowl for now too can give more space. Also, another reason to get a bigger tank it for proper temperatures. A tank that small will definitely not provide the temperature gradient necessary. One side needs to be cooler than the other.
