RIP wee Tokay

Lizardfreak, sorry you lost your friend, if you plan to get another Tokay/Reptile please find the correct information on husbandry/enclosures before you bring it home.
This will make it less stressful on you both.

Good luck

Thanks I think he was exposed to some disease or illness before I got him and it just gradually got worst.

I mentioned the set-up because of your image posted above, i`v only just got my first Tokay, i had her set up looking like your image above, a kind member named Michael pointed out to me that stress can kill.

I've seen more misinformation on YouTube than I care to rant about. The biggest one I've seem is the hides on the floor forcing the Tokay to the ground. This will kill them faster than the parasites from stress. Their normal world is on a vertical surface, 24/7/365. A Tokay on the ground is a sick or dead one.

So, lean the cork bark slabs up against the sides of the enclosure. Even better, lean a piece of slate and then lean the cork an inch or two off of that to create a nice vertical hide between the two. Key word here is VERTICAL!

Since i`v changed the set up as Micheal advised, my Tokay is never off the back wall, i hardly see him now that he`s got the option to hide behind or between the slate/cork. She is now eating well after this change which led me to think of your wee fella.

Hope it help`s bud :)

Could you post a picture because I have been trying to change her setup but I can't find any way to get her to feel secure up their because it is also pretty exposed besides for under her tree where her heat pad is so I'd love some ideas.

The images below show slate leaning against the polystyrene background and the cork against the slate with a 2-3 inch gap between each item.

Note: the white powder is calcium only.

On top, i`v a canopy with a UVB bulb and a Sun Glow bulb... The dome shape has a Night Glow bulb for night time. There a heat mat on the bottom floor ( out side with thermostat ) and a heat mat behind the wall of the polystyrene ( out side with thermostat ) The temp`s showing 75.2f is half way down on the left hand side, the temperature inside top is 89.6f just now and bottom on the floor is between 75f-78f

Humidity is 86% again half way down on the left hand side.

A step back to see the full picture, the gun shape devise is a infrared temp gun which i highly recommend to anyone with reptiles.

And the Tokay out having a bask on the polystyrene background :)

Tokay like the space between vertical pieces of slate/cork bark/glass, etc. As shown in the picture here, using slate leaning against the side of the glass with a cork bark slag leaning against that creates a 'nesting/hiding' place where they can still see out, (and you in) yet feel secure.

The photo is the base version from which you can add plants, water bowls, vines, etc.

FYI: Should you choose to get another Tokay, please consider a captive bred one. You can look to the breeders that you can find here, on the GU forums as a start.

In doing so you will avoid a parasite ridden, heavily stressed Tokay and the lab work and meds from the vet.

If you still wish to buy imports then you might consider being prepared for the following before doing so:

When I import Tokay, the group immediately gets fecal exams, the appropriate medications, hydration and supplements needed to insure the best possible chances of surviving. And then they get high quality gut loaded and dusted roaches and crickets. They are housed in tall glass enclosures with several vertical hides with the proper hot temps and several mistings a day.

I do this because after being collected from the wild, withheld for inspection, packaged, shipped, held and shipped again over several days or even a couple of weeks time without food and little if any water, is really hard on imported Tokay.

Good luck next time,
