How can you differentiate if it is a enigma or not? For example, what if I bought a Leo at a reptile expo and they did not tell me it was an enigma

I would say, don't buy a gecko if you don't trust the source to be honest about what you're getting.

^ Agreed with that.

For enigmas they have an unique look to them. They come with speckled patterns on the head and tail. Enigma gene enhances the color of the geckos, so their colors would be sharper and deeper. Like what would normally be tangerine on a gecko, would look almost red. It's part of the reasons why some breeders still choose to breed them...they look good and they sell, enigma syndrome and all. Kind of sad really.

I dont know why breeders continue to experiment with them knowing about the syndrome. i think its cruel actually :(

Some breeders believe that they can breed the Enigma Syndrome out, which is why they are still breeding Enigmas.

I wonder if it is working or they still have a lot of failed efforts, hopefully they do not sell their failed efforts to unsuspecting people, OR put them to sleep OR let them live with years of misery. Just not fair either way you look at it really.

I know many breeders claim they're just trying to breed enigma syndrome out. But when I checked them out and find that they're crossing enigma into everything to try to get first dibs on naming them...well I just can't believe they're doing it for anything other than fame and a chance at naming a new combination.

I suspect most are breeding them for one simple reason....they sell. They are beautiful geckos, one of a kind, it's easy to see why they sell. Unfortunately a lot of hobbyists that buy enigmas have no idea what to expect. Responsible breeders will tell people what enigma syndrome is about, and let them know that it could come up at anytime. There are many breeders that still don't have even a disclaimer about them. And that in my opinion is wrong.

And to answer your question, no, nobody currently can claim they have a lineage of enigmas that do not exhibit enigma syndrome. It's still a mix bag of some offspring don't exhibit the syndrome, some do. And those that appear healthy still have a chance to show the syndrome later. One thing for certain is that all enigmas carry this gene, so all enigmas pass this gene down to their offspring.

The thing with the syndrome is that it can show up at any stages of the life, so, how can one be sure their animals are syndrome free?? and, EVEN if they never show the syndrome, they most likely carry the gene and pass it to the offspring,
