Previous problems and/or illnesses:
When I got him about 1.5 weeks ago he was emaciated, his eyes were swollen shut, he has mouth rot (I think) and his tail was super skinny. I managed to clean out his pus filled eyes with warm water and q-tips, got tons of pus and a HUGE chunk of shed skin out of his left eye, and mainly pus out of his right eye. I have also been giving him plenty of "saunas" and making sure his damp hide is always damp. He recently shed (2 days ago), and I helped get the skin off his face. He can now open his right eye!!! Though he still keeps the left one closed... Luckily he is eating like a champ!!! He seems to have some bumps behind his eyes, probably from when he was rubbing his eyes on EVERYTHING in his enclosure... I believe he also has mild mouth rot. I am hoping to get him to the vet in 1 or 2 weeks, is there anything I can be doing to help in the mean time? I clean his tank at least once a week right now. I wasn't planning on rescuing him, but when a friend saw him for free on Kijiji she went to see him. He was in such a bad state she called me because she knows Im a sucker....haha.

I will post photos soon!

Morris!
The first few photos are from today, and the last photo is from the night I brought him home.

Pardon the messy tank! I cleaned up after I took the photos...probably should have cleaned before hand, haha!

#4---Humidity Chamber Assists for Stuck Shed: Leopard Geckos & Crested Geckos
Be sure to monitor your gecko at all times during these procedures.

Place your gecko in a Humidity Chamber for an hour or so to loosen stuck shed on toes or body.

In case the eyes have retained shed, gently flush them with a saline solution. One method is to fill a small squeeze bottle with the saline and gently aim the flow towards the eyes. Alternatively, saturate a small sterile gauze pad and gently hold this against the stuck eye/eye area shed for several minutes. Use a normal saline eye wash solution recommended for contact lens insertion, NOT a contact lens CLEANER!!!

If these methods are ineffective or if there is any sign of infection, prompt vet attention is necessary!

METHOD #1:
Take a plastic container a little bigger than your gecko
Poke holes in the lid so your gecko can breathe
Place a dampened paper towel or washcloth on the bottom
Add a rough rock or piece of cork bark
Spray the insides of this container
Add the gecko
Snap on the lid
Place this container near a lamp using a low wattage bulb such as a 25 watt incandescent bulb to further increas humidity
Monitor your gecko at all times

After an hour or two remove the gecko and gently attempt to remove the stuck shed using a gentle rolling motion with a wet q-tip.

Some folks place this covered container containing the leopard gecko into shallow warm water to generate the desired humidity.

Depending upon the amount of retained shed, this procedure may need to be repeated on several successive days.

:yahoo: on taking in leo Morris.

Excellent to hear that he still has an appetite. He probably was awaiting live prey for a very long time :-(.

1) 3 hides: warm dry and warm moist both on the warm end of the tank; plus cool dry
2) Recommend hands-on vet assistance asap. If Morris has mouth rot, it cannot be treated at home. If he has mouth rot, that infection can spread to other locations if not treated promptly.
3) Yellowish urates NOT good
4) Zoo Med's Reptivite with/without D3 and Zoo Med's Repti-calcium with D3 is much better than Exo-Terra supplements. Check out one of the posts following the leo caresheet for more of an explanation.
5) Consider getting a digital thermometer with a probe. Oftentimes analogs aren't very accurate.
6) Warm air temp is a bit high
7) 20 gallon long (30 x 12 x 12) is the minimum for establishing a thermal gradient
8) Crickets need to be fed once their at home

Thanks for the advice! Already loving this forum.

I will add another hide on the warm side. He now has 3 hides: 1 warm, 1 cool and 1 damp in the middle. I am also going to try longer sauna's, as I was only doing a maximum of 5-10 minutes as I wasn't sure how safe it was

I am definitely hoping to get him to the vet soon! Finances just don't allow it right now... Especially since I wasn't planning on rescuing a Leopard Gecko... Good news is he is looking 100% better than the first night I had him! His activity level has increased, as well as his appetite

I actually buy crickets daily for him... :blushing: I *think* is tank is close to being a 20 gallon, as it doesn't seem much smaller than my Mountain Horned Dragon's 30 gallon.... but I will measure it to see. I will definitely work on getting some better temperature equipment!

Thanks for all the advice. Can't wait to get him to the vet!!! :)

You are very welcome. Happy GU is working with you :).

Scoot the moist hide as close to the warm end as possible.

Good to hear he's looking better already.

You must live close to a pet store? Best to have a small supply of crickets at home so you can feed them healthy foods.

Here is one way:

Thanks for all the advice. Can't wait to get him to the vet!!! :)

Look forward to your updates right here :D.

Good news is he is eating and pooping. he could benefit from a warm bath, his toes look to be in bad shape. :(
he looks dehydrated and malnourished. humidity and proper feeding may help. maybe get your hands on oxbow or reptaboost to add some much needed vitamins/nutrients to his diet since he has gone without proper nutrition for a while.
Best to take him to a vet STAT and do a (cheap) fecal test and have him examine the eyes - may possibly need an antibiotic or some medicated eye drops.

thanks for saving his life.

Update:
Morris is doing great!!!! He has gained a lot of weight, and his tail is getting plump. He went for a checkup and the vet didn't prescribe anything for right now! He will have to go back next month to see if anything has changed. Since he was getting well on his own, she didn't feel the need to pump him with meds. Both of his eyes are now open and normal, but he has limited vision in his right eye.

Great news on the vet visit, did they do a fecal? Do you have an updated picture?

Yes they did. They never called me, so I assume nothing was wrong internally. He was a bit dehydrated so he got some pedialyte, haha! Other than that he is definitely on the mend.

He has to go back in a month for another check up! I will try and post some updated photos soon
