How many Leos together?

Ok, I see the general on census is only 1 male in a vivarium. Beyond that thought everyone seems to have different ideas. I have read that only keep one in each place. I also read that people have 1 male and up to 3 females together. Just curious what the current readers recommend ?

As you've noted, there is more than one way to do things. Some people feel strongly that leos be housed individually only. Others do small groups. In general, one rule of thumb seems to be (and, of course, others will differ) 1-2 geckos in a 20 gallon long footprint (12"x30") and then add about another 10 gallon footprint of space (approx. 200 sq. in.) for each additional gecko. I keep my geckos in 1.2 groups most of the year in a 20 gallon long with a heated "upstairs" level that's 12"x12". Of course, whatever grouping you choose (and obviously if you house a male with females you're going to get breeding) it's essential to monitor the geckos closely and make sure that everyone is comfortable and eating well and no one is getting bullied.

Here is my 2 cents. There is a risk of harm housing leopard geckos together. One may accidently bite the other thinking a tail is food. There may be a bullying issue. People have differing opinions as to how great that risk is, but it's hard to deny that it exists.

The only good reason I can see for putting multiple leopard geckos together is to breed. Even then, there is a calculated risk, but to get more leopard geckos it is a reasonable risk to take. If you just want them together because two leos together seems cooler than one by itself, I would advise against it, although it is ultimately your choice. Also, as Elizabeth said, it is hard to notice subtle signs that something may not be right if you do not have experience with the species. If you do opt to house leos together, you should be prepared to seperate them at the first sign of a dangerous situation. Just my humble opinion.

Thanks, that is why I ask. I am learning. I learn by asking :)

It's even better to read through many threads on your own, trust me. You will gain much more information and opinions. Sometimes the questions are so repetitive that you will only receive 1 or 2 tired replies. If you search for answers on your own first, chances are you'll find much more detailed discussions with the answers you need :)
