What should the temperature be in Moist Hide?

I recently got 2 baby Leos (Snow Engima and Tangerine Redstripe (or Jungle, I'm not sure)). The guy I got them from told me they were 3 months, but they looked more like 1 month old. I've had them for 3 weeks now. Everything is fine, they eat a lot, get along fine, the tank (20G Long) is set up with multiple hides and steady temperature. They are both still a little skiddish of me, but still very young so I'm not too worried.

The issue that I'm having is with shedding. The Tangerine shed fine the first time, but the second time it could not get the shed off of his head and front feet. The Snow Engima also had this problem on one of it's front legs, and had difficulty shedding part of it's body.

I'm wondering if my moist hide is warm enough to raise the humidity enough to help them with shedding? I put a thermometer in there and it ranges from 75-80 degrees.

I have it more towards the hot side of the tank but barely on the heat mat (due to space issues with my hot hide). I'm wondering if I should just move it directly on top of the Heat Mat?

Also, in case anyone is wondering.... both of my Leos were able to get the shed off them completely. I just put them in a tupperware container with warm water for 10 minutes. After doing this about 2 times with each of them, and making sure were in the moist hide they were able to finish shedding within another 24-36 hours. I just don't want to have to go through this ordeal every time they shed, plus, I really don't think the Tangerine enjoyed the water because it defecated in there immediately.

I will also be monitoring them as they get older...should one or both turn out to be males, they will be separated.

Congratulations on your new leos. Warm water often makes geckos defecate in my experience but that doesn't mean they don't like it. In my opinion, the temperature in your humid hide sounds fine. I do sometimes find some of my hatchlings have some shed left on them. It may not happen all the time. It also may be that you're catching them when they haven't finished getting the shed off --some of them get it all off quickly and some are a bit slower. Of course, for all I know, you may have watched them for a few days trying unsuccessfully. I would recommend keeping an eye on them to see how future sheds go before changing anything.

Hi Andi ~

A warm welcome to Geckos Unlimited!

I would definitely move your humid hide more over the heat mat, especially if your leos continue to have a some shedding issues. +10* F would be a beneficial IMO.

What are the temperatures in the warm DRY hide(s) and the cool hide?

My warm hide ranges from 88-91. The cool hide is 68-70. I also have a small hide in the middle right around 80

I would keep your humid hide about 85-90*F...just about the same temps as your warm dry hide. Can you scoot it over the head pad more?

thanks for that info. My Tangerine has shed twice now. 1 time was just fine, the 2nd time was a problem. I've only seen my snow enigma shed once, and he/she also had a problem. I think I'm just going to move it over to be more on top of the heat mat. Thanks again.

Thanks for the info! I just moved the moist hide over the heat mat area more as our Rocky is getting ready to shed again.

Elizabeth, I've saw you post that Zoo Med 3 in 1 hide a few times now.

I have a Exo Terra Large Hide that i'm using for my moist hide. I'm just wondering, is the Zoo Med somehow better? Is the opening higher up more desirable?

I will not be breeding my Leos so I don't need something for eggs...just a moist hide.

Was also wondering about getting a medium sized one. Ever since moving my Moist Hide to the hot side of the tank, it's gotten a little crowded over there.

The big advantage of the Zoo Med Repti-Shelter 3 in 1 cave is the deep lower section. It will hold a couple inches of dampened moss.

Just received my medium 3 in 1 cave two days ago. Seems to be a good size for my mature 9 inch, 72ish gram female. I'm hoping that Cha figures out how to enter. :D Ideally the off-ground opening could have the long side oriented parallel to the ground instead of the other way around!

These hides touch each other on the warm end of the 12 inch inside width enclosure with the above moist hide and this medium Exo Terra as the warm dry hide: http://www.amazon.com/Exo-Terra-Rep...584610&sr=1-1&keywords=exo+terra+reptile+hide

A large (giant) leo would require the large size.

You can take a look at the size of the large just in case you have a larger adult. None of my 3 are giants and they fit well in here.

Edit: Sorry, maybe not, you're already having problems with space.

Just an FYI...ever since moving my moist hide directly on top of the heat pad, both of my Leos have shed without issues at all.
