Petsmart Leopard Geckos

I am new to this site and didn't see this thread already so I added it. I will soon be getting a leopard gecko just as a pet in a 20-gallon long terrarium. I have heard that I can house 2 leopard geckos in this. I don't want to breed any leopard geckos so I will just be looking for a healthy leopard gecko at Petsmart. I was just wondering if any of you had any ideas on being able to make sure I get a female at Petsmart so once I am good at taking care of a leopard gecko I can add another female later. Please help!!!!

You could have issues doing this. For starters, ensuring you get a healthy Leo from a pet store could take more than just the "eye test", but I'm sure it's very possible.

The second issue could be house 2 together. Especially if you let one get acclimated to the environment first. Or if they are different sizes. I housed 2 juveniles together for 5 weeks. They were not of the same clutch but similar size. They were fine, but I decided to separate them.

The only way to make sure you get a female is to make sure that it's old enough to sex. I'm sure the people at the pet store would be more than happy to let you look at them to ensure you get a female. To make sure you know what to look for...I'd google it. It's pretty easy to find.

Even as petstore geckos aren´t the best choice, you can for sure find healthy geckos there, I have 3 geckos that come from Petco, and all do just great, and have been with me for years... however, the only way to be sure about the sex is that you personally check them, but they would have to be close to adulthood for you to be sure.
A 20 gallon is actually the recomended size for one single leo, my most sincere advice is that you carefully choose a healthy looking gecko, that seems alert, with no stuck shed, bright open eyes, plumpy tail, clean skin, and do not mind the sex of it.

The 3 leopard geckos from Petco you have are they in different terrarium or are they together? @Sakisa

I have to agree with everyone here. I have 1 from Petco and 2 from Petsmart that are healthy (after checking them before buying, vet checks, etc). Keep them separate in their own 20 gallon long tank (minimum) and everyone wins.

I got time from a pet store both are great now :). ... That being said remember if you get another one from a different clutch you must keep them apart for 60 days... They may seem alert healthy but you never know what may or not be developing :) always keep a spare set up in that case then after 60 days add them together

If you decide to get two please wait until you have the ability to determine the sex. If you end up with two males they will fight.

Specialty reptile stores and breeders will offer you your best chance of getting a male or female, if you are unable to tell yourself.

I have seen some breeders selling their animals for very reasonable prices, including some that post on this forum.
