Transporting a gecko

I am bringing my 2 month old gecko on a one hour ride to begin living in my classroom on Monday. I bought a critter keeper to transport her in. I am bringing my Exo Terra tank with me, but I did not want her to get hurt in it. What should I put in the critter keeper for the ride?

Wad up some paper towel and put it in the kritter keeper. That will cushion her to an extent and also give her somewhere to hide if she gets stressed.

Aliza,
Thank you! Should the paper towel be wet or dry? I bought a medium size critter keeper. Should I return it for a small one?

I have bought a tiny gecko 3.5g and transported it home in 2cup deli-cup in Dec here in Ontario, Canada. I covered it with my down coat, to keep it warm for the 1 hour drive home. As I wasn't planning on purchasing another gecko quite so soon, I had to do the best I could do with transporting it. If you are experiencing winter where you live, might I suggest transporting the gecko inside an insulated cooler of sorts and having a small bottle warmer for it to keep cozy? I'm not sure, but I would get a medium deli-cup and abandon the KK altogether unless you can find a cricket keeper at a dollar store.

Savannah Blue,
Thank you for your reply. It will be in the 60's Monday morning in Louisiana so temperature should not be much of a concern. I am concerned about my gecko being afraid.

Make sure you keep it dark, it will feel more secure that way. We transport our gecko's always in a styrofoam box, the gecko in a non transparant (except for the lid) kritter keeper or deli cup, filled with suitable substrate, in the case of cresteds we use paper towel as Aliza stated or spaghnum mos.
You should make it slightly wet, but also make sure it has some fresh airflow, wich won't be a problem with the kritter keeper ofcourse.

Don't know what age the kids are that you are teaching but make sure they don't stress out the gecko to much, give it enough hiding places.
Good luck. :)

Tamara,
Thank you for the advice. I teach first graders. In my classroom, I already have the following pets: Fire-Belly Toad, Eastern Box Turtle, and a Hermit Crab. The frog and the turtle are almost 8 years old. How easily will my gecko be stressed out by noise?

Most of them tend to be pretty calm and relaxed, however in our opinion it depends on wether it's already used to a bit of noise, or that it came from a very calm environment, for example, our gecko's are used to be in an active place, we maintain a rather large collection so we are always working in our gecko room, with the cat helping us. :) and they don't seem to mind, most of the time they even come out of their hides to check out what we are doing.., they don't care.

A friend of ours who has kept them in his bedroom, only being there for sleeping, his gecko's are alot more flighty and stress out much more then ours when he try's handling them or when he cleans their tank.

Our guess is that they will be fine as long as their is some adult supervision when handling them or when working on their tank, and given that you provide them with some secure places where they can retreat if they feel like it ofcourse.

Thanks to everyone's advice, my crested gecko made it to school just fine. All week, she has been a champ! She even let all of the members of my class pet her. Tomorrow, is Friday so I need to decide if I should bring her home for the weekend. I just do not think that my spraying the tank at 3pm tomorrow will be enough to last through Monday morning.

Could you leave a shallow bowl of water in the tank? Also, is your substrate coir or paper towel? Moistening the coir substrate helps keep humidity up. Covering 1/2 screen top with glass works too. Don't be too concerned. The reptile club at our school has crested geckos that make it fine over the weekend with the procedure mentioned here. They are hardy creatures.

You could leave a humid hide/lay box in the enclosure so the gecko has a respite from the dry conditions.
