Leopard Gecko Eye Problem!!!! HELP!

Hi,

I have a 5 year old Leopard Gecko, with no prior health issues.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that one eye was slightly more closed than the other. I assumed the light from outside was too bright, so he was just squinting.

Then, I came home a few days ago, and his eye was completely shut, I examined it further, and there was a green crust sealing his eye shut. I put a warm cloth to the eye and gently massaged the area. The eye was able to open after, but the green "glue" was still there. I could see the eye underneath, but it appeared foggy. The side eyelid is protruding further from the head than the other side.

I am currently applying eye drops to the eye, but not much difference yet.

Need help with possibilities on what it is, as well as what kinds of antibiotics he may need.

I am aware that a vet is likely needed, so more productive responses will be greatly appreciated.

This guy is my friend, please help us out!

I know you want ideas, but it sounds like an infection which probably requires antibiotics, which does make a vet visit mandatory.

Hi leopardgecko3 ~

Gently flush this eye with a normal saline solution (as in a contact lens wetting solution NOT a contact lens cleaning solution).

Seek vet attention soon to get the proper antibiotics.

This is definitely a vet visit. I'm drawing a blank on the name of the drops we are using for Goldie.

Eye infections take a long time to clear. I started treating Goldie 3 months ago. 1 eye is completely healed, the other has scar tissue, so I'm continuing with her eye drops.

There is probably stuck shed on the affected eye - however - you really need veterinary assistance to get it off so that you don't risk further damage to the eye.

Until you get him to the vet, you can try soaking him in a tepid bath which may loosen the shed on the eye. If it is an eye cap, there is likely an infection underneath it.

We did end up, in addition to the eye drops with injection antibiotics as well. A whole lotta fun trying to give subcutaneous injections on the upper front arms - have you looked closely to see how little those arms are?

Good luck - and please make an appointment with your vet.

(for cleansing the eye or flushing it out - our vet recommended Blink for Contacts as being the closest to the gecko eye chemistry - not this is NOT a contact cleaner, it is a lubricating eye drop - if she has her eye shut when I need to put a drop in, rather that dripping the expensive drop on it, I use a drop of blink, that I then gently run my finger over her eyelids and when she opens her eye after a few minutes I am able to apply the prescription drop)

Cheers, K
