Progress on Blind Neo

Its been a couple of weeks since we had to start force feeding NEO. Despite NEO's very strong objections to our interventions, my son and I work together to ensure he eats.

I genuinely believe NEO doesnt like crickets anymore, as he spits them out as many times as I put them in his mouth! Its quite an art getting them in his mouth and covering all bases for any spitting, but 90% of them are eventually swallowed. Poor mites dont get a quick death in this household!! On a plus side - I recently got hold of a tub of baby dubai roaches - which are way too small now, but at least I can try feeding them when they get a little bigger.

Neo has lost some weight but I think it may have stablised a little now - we'll keep monitoring. I am very aware of NEO's clumsiness around the tank, and how often he bumps his nose and he constantly licks furniture/obstacles as he moves around, but he seems to be relatively happy.

He is still shedding well - so thats good too.

I have to be honest, I didnt think he would still be with us this far down the line. And whilst I dont think he will make a ripe age, he seems to be doing ok for now. And we are happy with that :)

Thank you very much for your Neo update, congener329.

The lessons you are sharing with your son are priceless! :yahoo:

Never like to "miss" this info. Perhaps you might continue with Neo on this thread instead of beginning new ones? Then GU members can more easily follow Neo's history. :)

My update on Neo.

The routine of force feeding settled in well, and NEO stopped fighting (although he still bit!) Crickets eventually had to come off the menu - as he simply refused to eat them. Roaches became a substitute for a while, but a reluctance to swallow then developed, resulting in just baby roaches being taken.

NEO began to make few appearances, choosing instead to stay in his hides rather than basking on his log as he used to.

With this deterioration, we again spoke to the vets and discussed our options. The vet did comment that he had a good weight considering he was being force fed, but his nutritional levels were falling and a reluctant eater was likely to suffer additional health problems. And so the decision was made that the best option was to have NEO put to sleep. RIP NEO

NEO was certainly a new experience for us all, we learned plenty and thank everyone on GU for their help and guidance - in particular the support from Elizabeth Freer.
