Shed issue

This was the last of the trouble shed I noticed this afternoon. 1 q-tip, some lukewarm water, and some assistance was enough to get it off.

On a side note, I was going to clean out the poopy tile and I noticed a pretty gnarly smell coming from the enclosure. I removed the cool hide and in it was a poop and a... (how do I describe it?)... a clear, gooey, blob of gunk about an inch long. Not sure what it was but it was nasty. I guess I should've taken a picture of it but instead I just removed it fast. I have no idea what it might have been. Anyone ever see anything like that? Yuk!

I don't believe so. The only part that was left of the shed he started a week or so ago was this part on his nose. So the rest was eaten over a week ago and pooped out. This was about the width of my pinky finger and about an inch long. And very smelly.

If that happens again, how about considering a fecal?

That will be the next step.

Just in case you have not seen these:

:)#2---Fecal Sample Collection Procedure
My exotics vet recommends:

1. Place a piece of clean plastic where your leo usually poops. If your gecko poops somewhere else, take the poop to the vet anyway. Some poop is better than no poop! (Thanks to TheOneBlueGecko - 25 July 2011)

2. As soon as your gecko has passed some poop and urates, but without physically touching the sample, place the feces and urates directly onto a clean plastic bottle cap. (Vet has fecal sample containers if you can stop by first.)

3. Then place the bottle cap with fecal sample directly into a plastic ziploc bag. (Do NOT use paper towels or newspaper because those will absorb some of the feces necessary for a proper culture.)

4. Refrigerate this sample...unless you are taking the sample to your vet immediately. Do NOT freeze it.

5. Take this fecal sample to your vet within 24 hours of collecting...the sooner the better!

[There are two types of fecals: direct smear and fecal float tests. For geckos, ask the vet whether both tests should be run.]

That was probably regurgitation. I would not be overly concerned unless it keeps happening or the poops turn mushy.

Sleepy Dee's Leo Care Sheet

This is what I found this morning.

View attachment 33205

I'd make arrangements for a fecal now, especially since offices will have tighter schedules next week due to the holidays. Place a small sheet of plastic down to collect. :)

Click right here and scroll to the Health tab under Leo Care: Leopard Gecko Health and Problems

Then scroll further for photos entitled Faeces, Fecals and Poo.

Time for a fecal. Please remember that parasites can break down a young leo very quickly. I would get to a vet asap.

Elizabeth, thank you for checking up. I have moved Pongo to a quiet room by himself. He was in the living room where people gather regularly and where the TV in on until around 10-11pm. This may have been adding to his stress. He is now in a very quiet room and we will see if that helps acclimate him a little better. I spoke with a recommended reptile vet and I am going to monitor him closely for another few days. We will do a fecal and check-up next week if things do not seem to be getting better.

You're most welcome. :)

Pongo will no doubt appreciate quiet.

Good to hear that you're in touch with a recommended reptile vet as backup. Let us know how it goes.

Only 13 grams. :( Hope we can get this guy healthy.

How is Pongo's appetite?

Oxbow's Carnivore Care is the best assist food I know. It is an all-in-one powder you mix with water. If your vet does not carry it, you can order via Amazon. Comes in 2 sizes.

Guess who is shedding again? Woke up my little guy to give him his daily meds and noticed that he had begun to shed again. Let's hope this goes a little better than the first time. Fingers crossed and praying that the medications and supplementation is working.

Must be Pongo!

I hope that dosing the meds and the Carnivore Care gets easier each time, Patrick. :)

I'm praying too.
