Transport to the vet

I'm taking Eclair to the vet to get her checked properly since she's not eating and losing weight (and Donut will come with just for a check-up). My question is: how should I transport them to the vet? I don't have a car so I'll have to take the bus.

Should I put them in small tubs, then in a ventilated box with a heat pad, as if I was shipping them? It's quite cold here right now :/

Whats the temp outside? If I had to make a vet visit I might have to do the same because I have always lived in cities and used bus's. I would do everything you can to insulate it when it exposed to the elements and the heat packs seems like a good idea. How many bus's, how long do you think you will be outside?

It's between 4-8 C outside, I plan on taking them a day when the weather's not horrid (the vet has drop-in so I can go whenever I want). I have to take one 20 mins bus and then walk for 20 mins (there is a bus all the way but it takes longer than walking), and then there's about the same on the way back I guess

Thats not to horribly long, the only problem would be not able to keep them warm enough when walking outside. Also i would recommend having them in separate containers, and then put them in one box together so they will not injure each other while being scared. Do you have any friends with cars that could give you a ride or you could borrow? I would think it would be easy to keep them warm if you have a warm car instead of the outside temps.

Unfortunately, there's nobody that can drive me and I can't drive. I do plan on putting them in separate containers and then both in a box with a heating pad in the middle. I guess I'll just have to try and insulate as much as possible, I could stuff some clothes in the box instead of paper (to keep the tubs in place)

I just took mine to the vet as well. I put her in a tupperware container and just carried her inside of my winter jacket. It was on a 30 minute drive though, and I called a car service. Figured it would be quicker than the bus.

Even with a heat pad I would only go now if you have some kind of door-to-door service like a taxi.

Otherwise I'd wait till the temperatures are between 40-50*F outside. That's why many folks do not ship in winter.

Apparently there's a "hurricane" right now so I'll wait until next week and see :3

In my opinion, they should be fine if you put each in a deli cup and keep them zipped into your jacket. It's obviously not ideal, but these are pretty hardy creatures and your body heat should keep them pretty warm. (Yes, do wait till after the hurricane).

Ok I think I have to take Eclair to the vet ASAP (not tomorrow because I can't) because today I went to mist her hide when I discovered a weird thing in her poop-corner. It was like a little slimy white lump laying in a lot of liquid. We looked at it closely, wondering if it was moss but TBH it looked far too gooey to be moss.

My problem though is that she won't eat, so I'm not getting any stools for samples :/

[EDIT] Actually I can take them early tomorrow morning so I'll just do my best to insulate the box and bring an extra heat pack along with a thermometer in case it gets too cold

Did you save the "little slimy white lump" for the vet?

Just in case the problem is contagious, I'd bring Donut and Eclair to the vet in separate boxes. Great idea to bring a thermometer and an extra heat pack.

Good wishes for the results.

Unfortunately, we threw it away from habit without thinking :/

I got up this morning and I realised I can't take them today after all, it got a lot colder overnight.

The good news is that it appears she's eaten a roach! Last night we got her out for some climbing on the stairs and then I cranked up her temperatures a little, even though the thermometer in the tank said it was already 33,5 C (she's never over at her cold side so I figured it might be off). I'm waiting for the infrared thermometer to arrive so then I can verify whether the thermometer is off or not.

I hope everything works out. My girl went 3 1/2 weeks and I made sure to keep her well hydrated. I dropped a male dubia in the enclosure, the hunger strike ended in 10 seconds.

I guess we won't need to take her to the vet after all, she had two roaches overnight. The thermometer is still reading the same even though I've cranked the temps so I guess it is broken. I feel really bad that she's been cold for a couple of weeks but at least she'll be OK from now on :3

For the first time in a month, I actually got to see her eat! I dropped some (newly moulted) mealworm beetles in for her and she gobbled two of them right up, even though she's been in her cold hide all day! The infrared thermometer arrived so we've been spending the past few days adjusting the temperatures :>

She's been doing well lately and eating a little more but I found out another reason she hasn't been eating - she's been chomping on some moss *sigh* We noticed her getting some weird pooping-behaviour on today and it turned out she couldn't get it out properly so she was walking around with poop and moss hanging out of her butt. We put her in a bath, which disintegrated it a bit and then I had to pull out as much moss as I could. She's now sitting in the bath for about 15 minutes, hopefully she'll be able to pass the rest.

No more moss for her!

Try gentle massaging of her belly from throat to vent. You could use a drop or two of olive oil/mineral oil on Eclair's nose to help her pass the rest of the moss.

Kyle is using compacted Eco Earth coco fiber for his leo Gaz.

yeah i really like the eco earth, it will hold a lot of moisture, especially if you pack it down. Another member, i dont remember who, said their leo took a bite of eco earth once, and spit it out in disgust, and never tried to eat it again. That leo had no problems going to the bathroom. I think eco earth is small enough that it can be passed, at least a lot easier than stringy moss! 1 brick of eco earth goes a long way, so dont buy much if you do. It expands in water.

BTW, im Kyle if you didnt know. Haha

I've usually used Eco Earth but we ran out so I had to use some moss for just a week or two :/ She will be getting proper check-ups today anyway because it's MOVING DAY. Hopefully it doesn't stress them out too much but I'll be setting them up in large tubs for a few days 'til we get the vivs back up :>
