Dropped Tail Help

Today when I woke up my leos's tail had fallen off. I only have him, so it wasn't a problem with housemates. He had been hiding on the cooler side of his tank for about 2-3 weeks, but we had lifted his cave twice (one of those times being last night) and he seemed to have enough food and the cave had certainly not landed on him at all. I'm monitoring the temperature and keeping it as quiet as possible. Does anyone have any speculation as to why he dropped his tail and/or any advice to reduce the stress of tail regrowth for both my Leo and me? Thank you!

As far as regrowth goes, if you leave him alone for awhile and he's not on a particle substrate, he should be fine and the tail could regrow in any number of shapes. As far as why the tail came off, that's really a mystery. Is there any way he could have gotten stuck and dropped the tail trying to get out (I had a gecko of a different species that dropped her tail twice before I figured out that the ceramic sculpture she was climbing on had a sharp edge at the bottom and she was getting stuck trying to squeeze through it).
What substrate is he on (I cared for a gecko that had been on crushed walnut substrate and appeared to have dropped her tail as she was passing some of the walnut pieces that she had ingested).
