Connecticut Crested Gecko Breeding Regulations?

Hi Everyone,

I am planning on launching my own small-scale crestie breeding business, and was curious to see if anyone could give me some advice on how to ensure what I do is legally sound. I can't get a solid answer as to what kind of paperwork or licensing I need to have done in order to protect myself and to allow me to sell locally to small reptile stores or at expos. I am estimating a general income from this business to come out somewhere between $200-400/year, considering I have only two breeding females and a nice breeder male. (Pictures of the parents of my newest clutch below). Any advice I can get is appreciated!

I'm sure you'll have to look up what your state laws are about claiming extra income for taxing purposes.
This is where I'm at.
I'll be forming an LLC next year since I too expect to be making a little bit extra and I don't want Uncle Sam to be coming after me.
I know in Michigan you don't need a license or permit to breed and sell geckos so I'm all set there.
I'd just be sure to look up your state's specific laws.
Otherwise, I wish you luck. These little ones are so much fun! :)

you'll need a business license. this can be necessary at city, county, or state level.

I'd find a local mentor that can make sure you're doing things right.

In MA there is no licensing or paperwork of any kind required. I paid $60 to my city for 4 years to be considered a "sole proprietorship" (you can look up the definition). If you vend in the state of NY you will need to have a tax ID number as a vendor and you can do that via the NY state tax website (Department of Taxation and Finance). If you vend at White Plains, the show organizer will want a copy of your certificate. It's not hard to do. That's about it. You can also read some of my Gecko Time articles here:
