I have a standings day gecko in an 18 by 18 by 24 tall exo terra. I have a reptisun 5.0 uvb bulb, and a 5000k flouresent bulb for the live plants. For his basking light i am using a 75 watt night time heat bulb by exo terra atm because its all i had lying around. I want to get a better basking light, but im not sure what to get. Does the light have to be an incandescent bulb or can it be an infrared basking bulb? If someone can give me an answer to this question that would be great

I believe that the optimal basking temp should be upper 80's to lower 90's. You may be hitting that with your heat bulb. Have checked the temp where it likes to sit? I use a Zoomed combo reptisun 5.0 cfl/halogen bulb fixture for my guys, I checked it yesterday, it was at 117 immediately under the halogen bulb.

I get the halogen puck lights from Home Depot. Just make sure there's a basking spot close enough to the light to make it worthwhile but not so close that the gecko will get burned.

My local Home Depot no longer carries low wattage (20 watt) halogen puck lights. They've moved on to Xenon pucks that don't really work for the heat some of our geckos need.

I recently bought new halogen pucks from Lamps Plus near Portland, Oregon. (I think I'm set for life! :coverlaugh:)

I place mine on a rheostat (and a timer):

Petco should carry a puck light. Frankly, the gecko is looking for the heat within a certain range high 80's to mid 90's should be accurate. I have one gecko that hangs beneath the puck light, the other chooses to sit beneath a led spot light. Both seem happy and the temps have been checked with a temp gun, the basking areas are about the same temp. How about a shot of your setup, We may be able to give helpful suggestions to help out with some visual reference

Elizabeth, I don't know if you've ever visited Sunlan Lighting, but they carry every kind of bulb under the sun, and probably a half dozen or so under Alpha Centauri, as well :). They're on N. Mississippi, and when you're done, there, the whole street is full of interesting shops and places to eat or drink. Z and I often spend many hours in the area after "just" going to Sunlan to get bulbs :). Then again, since you live in PDX, you probably already know about the place, but perhaps there are other Portland locals who don't, so I'll list the site address, anyway:

I just added post 140 on the Leopard Gecko Care Sheet to share Portland, Oregon links with locals. Thanks for your contribution, IrishEyes! :)
