Time for a new Tank?

Queso is about 6 - 9 months now and is growing nicely.

He is about 7 inches

he is currently in a 20 gallon habitat

Looks cramped in there. Should I get a larger habitat?

That looks way to cramped to be a 20 gallon to me. Look into getting a 20 gallon long tank. That should be plenty of room for Queso. You can always go slightly bigger as well. Good luck

there's a show in April in Oregon. there's one up in Monroe in May. those will be your best bets for the kind of caging you're looking for. you could buy online, but then you're paying for shipping as well.

36 is 6 inches more than I have on the filing cabinet that his home sits on unfortunately.

The top is exactly 30 inches.

My wife would not go for it hanging off on each side by 3 inches.

I recommend checking Petco, as they often have 1$-per-gallon sales! That's how I got most of my tanks, from there or off of Craigslist(it can be hard to find well priced 20 gallon longs on Craigslist though). This applies to specialty sized tanks(long/breeder/etc.) of the same brand if they're in stock at the store. So a 20 gallon long would only be $20. The only issue is these are standard fish tanks, so you'd have to settle for not having a front opening tank. The 20 gallon long isn't very tall, which helps make up for the size difference a little bit, if you're worried about accessibility.

I would also recommend checking out the expo, sometimes you'll find a real gem. Just be sure to get there early if possible, the best deals sell pretty fast.

Got Queso settled into his new home and he seems to be liking it.

Added a couple of new items - Hammock and a "Bridge" for him to walk up.

That's a UVB bulb on the left side and a ceramic heat element on the right. He also has an under tank heater under the half log as well which is controlled by a thermostat.

Queso seems to like his new Digs.

Any recommendations on the new set up?

Hello, what uvb bulb is that? I only thought the correct uvb lamp was long thin bulbs, like t8. To put uvb dose at .7 for leopard geckos.

Yeap, that's for sure. I go by Francis bains, she one of main people who put togther hole uvb dose . She has come on here, and breaks it down, like what lamp, with distance, gives you what.
I just bought meter, t5 fixture was to strong, so got t8 fixtures. I think dose for geckos is .7. It's knot much.
Anyway it's good read the information francis bains wrote about. It's around here somewhere.

A Solarmeter 6.2 or 6.5 will tell you precisely what amount UVB is reaching your gecko. They are pricey!

Ratio of UVB : UVI (UltraViolet Index)
  • Exo Terra compact fluorescent bulbs = 14 :(
  • ***Zoo Med Reptisun compact fluorescent bulbs = 31
  • ***Zoo Med Reptisun fluorescent tubes (T 8 ) = 34
  • ***Arcadia D3 23W E27 - no rating available
  • Sunlight = ~40-50
Melody also shares:
"I have info on reflectors too, which can make quite a difference! Arcadia sells a good reflector, but you can make one yourself by bending cardboard in an arc and covering it with tinfoil. Surprisingly, the dull side of tinfoil reflects UVB better than the shiny side! And white paint reflects light but not UVB!"
