Ideal humdity levels?

First off Im still new to the leopard gecko pet world. My question is why does it seem when I do a computer search for humidity levels, every site seems to have different ranges. I have seen 20-30%, 30-40%, 20-40% and 20-50%. Why is there so much discrepancy. My tank seems to be registering between 40 and 44%. Also what side of the tank should the moist hide be on, the
cold or warm side?

Hi,

Yes, very confusing I bet. Rest assured I would not steer you wrong. Can they survive in lower? Yes. Is it ideal? No. Shedding and dehydration is very common and as a responsible owner, you want to provide the best conditions possible. It is very stressful for the Leo when you have to intervene. Some Leo’s won’t use their humidity hides or will not use it enough. The shedding problems begins about a week before and if the rest of the tank is too low, the skin may not receive enough moisture.

Your humidity is ok at 40-44%. The humidity hide should be over the UTH so that there’s condensation.

My leo seems to spend a fair bit of time sleeping the day away in the moist hide. During the evening and night he is out and about roaming his setup, after he eats he goes to his warm hide and lays on the warm tile for a couple hours. Come morning time when I get up he retreats back to the moist hide to sleep the day away.

mine is kind of in the middle.

I keep my humid hide half on the heat and half off. Right now the humidity in my apartment is terribly low (hovering around 20, max 30). I keep her humid hide moist and so far despite the low ambient humidity she hasn't had any trouble shedding. She also does spend a lot of time in her humid hide and always has so as long as your gecko uses their humid hide I don't think low humidity should be too big of a concern.

My gecko seems to enjoy sleeping the day away in the moist hide, the question I have is does the moist hide always need to be moist or only around the days before and during the time the leopard gecko sheds?

I would let it dry out about every 2-3 days and replace the paper towel(if that’s what you are using), because things like bacteria and yeast thrive in moist warm areas. Best to maintain moderate humidity within the enclosure itself.

I use sphagnum moss in the moist hide and mist it about every 2 days and then replace with fresh moss every 10 days or so
