Leopard Gecko Humidity

Hi all!

Just to preface this a bit, I'n completely new to reptile keeping, but not new to pets. I've had dogs, cats and fish so I'm not entirely in the dark to pet keeping.

I've set up a bio-active naturalistic vivarium for a leopard gecko, but I am struggling to keep the humidity down. It sits at around 55-65% ambient, but in the dry hide is down to 30%ish.

Does anyone have any advice for lowering humidity? I'm struggling with whether not I can still raise one without the risk of infection

Welcome to Geckos Unlimited!

40-60% humidity is fine for leos. Some keepers don't worry about leo humidity at all.

A cloth bag of uncooked rice may help lower humidity. A second water bowl near the warm dry hide may increase humidity.

Really? I'm terrified of him getting an infection from it, newbie and all that. I've read a lot of people saying 30-40% humidity?

Thanks for the tip, I'll try it out!

I've attached a pic of the setup - pre-dry out and before the last touches were made. Let me know what you think!

That’s fine as long as you have enough heat in there. What are the temps? Air and surface?

They actually seek out and prefer that range of humidity. Is the light tube on the right installed above or on the back?

You're welcome.

Leos could get respiratory infections when moist humid hides are kept with inadequate heat (on the cool end or in the center of the enclosure).

How are you heating your leo's home? What type lights are you using?

What are your ground temperatures right on top of the substrate and underneath the warm dry hide as measured by the probe of a digital thermometer or a temp gun?
