+ for crypto

Hello all,
We recently brought in our two young geckos whom we lost to an unknown disease, for a necropsy.
They both tested positive for crypto.
Now my concern is our juvenile leo Glaedr and our beardie will pick this up. Glaedr is in an enclosure NOT previously occupied by the two that were positive for crypto. Neither is Squeaky.
But they are in the same room.
I have disinfected everything with bleach, and thrown out all cage accessories. I have contacted the pet store they were bought from and will be bringing the report in on Monday.
My questions are:
1. Is it likely my current boys will contract crypto?
2. I have a bottle of reptaid and wondering if I should use it as a preventative maintenance.
3. What more can I be doing?

I was really hoping this wasn't the case but here we are. First experience with these beautiful creatures has definitely been a heartbreaker.

It sucks pet stores just dont give a F. about what they are selling as long as they are making money.. The breeders they get them from probably wont last much longer if their breeders are infected so atleast theres that..

Im not sure if you would be interested but if i can manage to hatch some of my own geckos id be willing to give you one once its up to size as long as you paid shipping / packaging costs.

Have you also tossed any feeders/insects & worms Basil & Lavender had and started with fresh feeders from a different pet shop?

It's hard to ID crypto's source.

You are too kind. I would love to take you up on that offer. I'm sure by then everything will be settled down here.

I didn't but I will now. The crickets s we were feeding are long gone but the mealies are still around.
I never thought of that as a source. Is it possible they contracted it through the feeders? Most of our feeders come from the same pet store but not all.

I don't know that crypto can be spread by feeders unless they have been in gecko cages and have eaten the geckos' feces. The best crypto disinfectant I have heard of is actually ammonia. At the moment I'd recommend that you get your new gecko tested for crypto and then have it tested again in 2-3 months because sometimes the crypto isn't being shed at the time of testing.

I think crypto could be transmitted via the feeders. If pet store employees aren't thorough about cleanliness, then definitely YES. If the source is the breeder yet these leos came from the pet store, my answer is the same.

Is there some other pet store you can use permanently now?

I don't know whether you've seen this.

Ammonia and bleach should never be mixed. That combination will emit toxic fumes which are bad for both you and the animals.

"If you want to be absolutely sure when disinfecting, use ammonia. Ammonia is the only thing effective at killing crypto, giardia, and coccidia oocysts."

---Thanks to Mardy (10 July 2013)

However, even ammonia does not totally eradicate ALL oocysts. Even at the highest concentration of ammonia, a small fraction of viable oocysts still remain.

Thanks to cricket4u:
"Use ammonia to sterilize a glass tank. Bleach does not kill crypto. Toss the cage furniture.

I want to explain the reason why I think it is best to just throw everything out. I have read several of these and the results varied.
