To bother him or not...?

I got my new gecko.
He seems okay, but did travel with a lot of poop and was starting to show signs of shedding.

He was freaked out at first but was traveling around his enclosure quite a bit.

He even climbed on my hand and I was able to guide him to his shed hide. He has not come out of his hide since (3 days now).

Usually I would leave him alone but I wondered if I should open the humid hide and make sure his shed went okay?

Sure, it's fine to take a look. Just try not to handle it needlessly until it is comfortable, feeding, etc.

Thanks, I took tour suggestion and took a look and he has ALL his old skin still on!!!

I sprayed the top of the hide and a bit of the moss he was not on and put it back.

He should have taken the skin off days ago and I can even see an area that split ...

Is he going to shed or am I going to have to peel him because he’s too scared to move??

Give him another few hours and maybe before you go to bed, if there hasn't been any change, try peeling him. You could always leave the hard to get off parts for now and just try for the easy parts and do another session tomorrow.

Before "peeling" him, place him in an even more humid hide.

Take a plastic container not too much larger than he is.
Poke holes in it so he can breathe.
Add wet paper towel strips.
Spray the top and sides of this container.
Place your gecko inside.
Carefully snap on the lid.

Place this box on top of the heat mat for several hours. This will help loosen his shed for the "peeling".
Then assist him.

Thankfully he shed overnight and from what I can see it went well. Except there is a very small strand left on one side of his upper lip.
I’m hoping that it will fall off before tonight or I’ll have to bathe him (which won’t be fun as he’s very nippy).

Shed went well and I didn’t have to do anything!

He finally had a hormworm 4/5 days ago (4 days after not eating from coming home) and had a few mealworms everyday since, but no poop!
I was able to grab him this morning and I gave his bell a little rub.
Tonight I added another water dish as the other end of his tank for now.
How longs do you think I can hold off Before I should bathe him?

Might he eat another hornworm? Hornworms are sooooo juicy.

Try giving him a couple drops of olive or vegetable oil on the tip of his nose.

Have you named him? ;)

His name is Sobek &
I found the poop!

Ugh... three of them and all in his hot hide *♀️.
I washed the area and place them where I want him to poop which is a hammock above the hot hide.
I’m not sure if he found the hammock yet so I also place one On Top of the hot hide.

I’d rather him go anywhere but in the hide and on the slate

Hopefully this works!!

I hope Sobek gets your message. I send good wishes that he moves on to more convenient and healthy poop spots.

My leo always poops in her cool hide.

It did not work...

I cleaned up again and used a bit of reptiwipe.
Thank
This time I changed the hot hide out completely for another one that’s smaller. I am hoping this will discourage the pooping inside of the hide :/

Edit: switching to a smaller hide did not work. I have restored to using he smaller hide as an out house :/
