Old guy here, planning to try to buy a gecko at my local repti day event. So I signed up here to pick up a little needed knowledge. Hope to take part in conversations as I can. Thanks :)

I would like a tokay gecko, they seem to be a sturdy species. While I realize they are not for everyone they do have qualities I appreciate. Currently have a 12x12x18 exoterra for temporary housing, and I'm in process of building an 18x18x48 enclosure. I keep the house temperature at 78 degrees and am wondering if the tokay will require a basking light? The enclosure design includes 12" at the top to allow placement of lights.

Thanks for the link to Mr. Mcurley's article I have read it several times. Watching his video on youtube of him moving tokay's from one enclosure to another did erode my confidence in his teachings ;) . If not red lights then would you suggest the ceramic heating bulbs?

Elizabeth, I was thinking of this one.

I was thinking he might have spared himself some pain and blood loss if he had used a small length of pvc to transport the more unruly lizards in. But everyone's a Monday morning quarterback. ;) . I like watching Mcureley and this other gentleman from south Korea.

The process seems to require a great deal of nerve, and a great deal of pain tolerance. I am hoping that I have enough of both.

Elizabeth, thank you, I will check them out. As it happens I ended up not going to the reptile show. Too much month at the end of my money. I am however proceeding with the enclosures, both of them. Water-proofing the boards with polyacrylic, a water based formula. As my money is scarce for the next few months I'll be looking for ways to get things done without cash.

You're welcome!

I recommend a captive bred tokay. Perhaps you might find a tokay who needs rehoming? Wild caught tokays often arrive with a heavy parasite load. Tokays' attitudes increase bite potential when removing those mites! ;-)

Elizabeth, I'd like a captive bred to avoid any health issues. It does depend on finances and availability at the time I go hunting for one. I have no idea where one would locate unwanted Tokay Geckos. It's a nice thought though. :)

Thanks Panther-Gecko, I don't think FB allows live animal sales. Nothing on craigslist in my area. Some possibilities on fauna classified , if I can get some money together. :)
