QUESTION 2: "How do we know for sure a gecko is dead? I have read that their deaths can be really long and slow. That's terrible for us owners."
A gecko has died when he or she is no longer breathing.

QUESTION 1: What should be the "ambient" temp on the cool side of his tank? What am I aiming for? I have a thermometer on the wall on that side of the tank. Let me know. Thanks!

The ambient temp on the cool side of Scooby's tank should be around low to mid-70s.
Scooby needs a dedicated cool end 24/7.
When it's heated from above like it appears you've been doing, it no longer qualifies as a 'cool' end.
