Superworms

So I've read in a few places that you can feed your geckos Superworms, and I'm just wondering how big a leo should be before you start feeding them. I always look at them when I go to the store, and even though SoCo is getting big, I just dont ever feel like he will be big enough to eat those monsters.

Last year my 11 gram leo, who had not been a good feeder, chomped down 2 of them the first time they were offered and was fine.

Last June, when I got GiGi at 3 weeks old, you couldn't find mealworms anywhere. So I fed her supers. She ate them until we could find mealworms. Which was a good four months. I wouldn't feed them constant, but every now and then wouldn't hurt. Lol.

even though they are like...longer than his entire body? I mean, they are almost as big as he is. I just feel like he would choke.
I definately want to vary up his diet, though, and its hard to find anything around here. Just a little more reassurance, and I'll go out and buy some. lol

If you really want to add some variety, I'd suggest roaches as opposed to yet another type of worm. Get over the name "roach". It's meaningless. You can call them "happy fun bugs" if it makes you feel better. But they're the best source of food you're going to find. And they're very easy to breed. So you don't have to keep going to pet stores and dishing out $$$ all the time to get your food.

Do they stink like crickets and superworms/mealworms can?
I've been thinking about getting some roaches for a while, I order a box of 500 Superworms and take care of them to be a food source for my leos, but if I don't keep them clean and everything, they really start to stink.

No, roaches generally don't stink. They don't chirp like crickets do either. :)

Nope, no stink. There's LOT'S of benefits to roaches. I suggest either B. Dubia or B. Lateralis. I use both. Check out the "feeders" forum for more info.

I am already on it! I very much like the no stink and no chirping, that's why I hate crickets.
I may be stearing toward the B. dubai, I am going to look into getting them, thank you!

I use supers for Tony and Lola (I believe both are full grown...) and I've seen them choke a little on a few big ones... I'm careful about which supers I feed to which gecko - Tony is much bigger, so he gets the biggest ones, but Lola usually gets the runty supers, even though she pounces more than Tony. If they don't bite the heads first, sometimes I think the worms actually latch onto the inside of their mouths...someone correct me if I'm wrong... I've just seen both Tony and Lola keep chomping once the whole body has been swallowed and I can see it in their mouths when they open them.

If the supers are as big as SoCo, I wouldn't use them as feeders just yet... But that's just my opinion, and I've only had geckos for a little while... :)

I know I have said it before on the feeder page, but sometimes I really don't like living in FL..I can't keep feeder roaches!!

So my geckos get mealworms, crickets, waxworms every now and then. And since I keep superworms for my bearded dragon-my larger leos get those once in a while to. I have fed leos that were 30+grams and larger superworms with no problems. to date only 1 of my adults can't eat them and I have no idea why but she throws them up a few minutes after eating them every time.

Bahamut likes superworms

Bahamut went through an eating binge a while back where he would only eat one (ir two if I was lucky) large crickets every couple of weeks and he recently came out of it when I gave him a superworm. He ate it really easily and he'll even go after it when I drop it on the floor of his terrarium, which I have never seen him do for crickets since he was a lot younger. He will eat two superworms at a time now but sometimes he only eats one. He even eats them faster than my fire skink does and he's even smaller. I found this sort of odd because he wouldn't even look at a mealworm. Do superworms have any nutritional differences besides obviously holding in more calories?
