There's a virus going around (I haven't used crickets in a month because it got some of my geckos sick) that's killing crickets.

Get a cricket keeper or kritter keeper if the jar doesn't have holes. I put oatmeal on the bottom of their container, egg crates (a couple, crickets fight and kill each other), carrot, and a little slice of potato. I change it out every day.

Crickets tend to die quickly anyway. They just don't have a very long life span. That's one of the big benefits of using tropical roaches as feeders. They can live much much longer.

I used a huge rubbermaid container when I kept crickets......I cut the top out and the 2 holes in the ends and hot glued ALUMINUM screening into the holes (they can't chew through aluminum but will chew through regular screening).

Lots of egg crates, lots of food and they were cleaned daily.....if a cricket dies it releases a gas that will kill the others, in a small jar this wouldn't take long to happen....in a nice roomy container with lots of ait flow this is less likely to happen.

But I hate crickets, I have switched totally to roaches now and I never looked back!

What size/weeks old were those crickets, geckogirl123?

I have some "3 wo" crickets that I set up April 30. Four plus weeks later they are doing fine. I use either an extra large Kritter Keeper covered with a lightweight cloth in addition to the lid or a 56 gallon Sterilite container that I keep open. Place in the gutload food, then the crickets, then a double layer of egg cartons, and top with a single layer of white paper towel that I spray every other day, maybe every third day, for moisture. I keep them at room temperature 68 F - low 70s. The crickets seem to do fine. Only the 4 wos have a tendency to die off. I really do not clean the cage till I get a new order of crickets.

The longest I've kept them alive is a week, mostly because they don't last long as Small Fry just devours them like anything else, he'd gourge himself if I'd let him.

Out of 4 dozen, I probably lost about 7 or eight, I keep changing out the food and water.

I would switch to roaches but I hate to say, that they absolutely terrify me, so its just mealies, supers, and crickets to me.

But luckily for me there's a breeder with a shop in town called Go Lizards that breeds all his own feeders.

Worked out for me when the pet stores had trouble with mealworms and now all the trouble with the crickets.

I absolutely love that store and its even in walking distance.

I know, thats how far I use to drive for them until he opened up, and he's even had to move to a new store and everything because of how much business he does. I actually have to go up there again and pick up more feeders for the week/month.
