Debatable issues in health and disease

Here's a common sense reason to leave calcium without D3 in the enclosure (if you're going to leave a supplement) as opposed to leaving calcium with D3 in there. Of course, as we've mentioned above, this is common sense, not researched, and it still may not be what some keepers prefer to do:

It does seem to make sense that nocturnal reptiles don't need that much D3. I don't think they can tell the difference between calcium with D3 and calcium without D3. Consequently, they will be licking the calcium in the tank whenever they feel they need it but will be getting the D3 as well. It makes sense to me to supply the D3 in small amounts separately and use calcium without D3 in the enclosure if desired. Just my opinion.

That does sound like common sense, but I wonder how much D3 is required to process a certain amount of calcium. If the amount of D3 was very low in the mixture, would it make sense that they are both consumed at the same time?

Not expecting a real answer, but that's what pops into my mind. I'm not sure if I'll have the time to research this in the near future (got an additional possible job offer - which is amazing because I've been looking for work since April.) But once I settle into my new schedule, I will revist this topic :) with full gusto!

It makes sense that vitamin D3 + calcium "are both consumed at the same time"! However, if they are both in a dish, the food is missing. :-( When one lightly dusts say Repti Calcium with D3 onto food, calcium and D3 are consumed together. The food is there to assist in the calcium absorption.

Most of the vitamins and calcium should come directly from a feeder's diet, not from any supplements. :)

Good wishes with your new job(s).
