Urgent! Is my gecko sick!

Hello, I just bought my gecko 6 days ago and he got used to his surroundings very quickly. He began eating right away. I had noticed that he sleeps a lot and I'm not sure why. I know that's normal for leopard geckos because they are nocturnal but I will wake up around 1 am and see him sleeping. When I take him out he is very active. He runs around and crawls up my arm. He ate 5 mealworms the other night and i can't tell if he's bloated or not. He makes little faint squeaks when I hold him and I'm nervous he's in pain. I suffered a lot from the recent passing of my other gecko and I'm scared my new one is sick. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

I can't be sure because I'm not a vet and I can't see your gecko. What you describe sounds pretty normal, though. Geckos are pretty lazy. They're usually most active in the early evening. Making noise when you hold him is not unusual. It takes a lot to get them impacted, unless you have him on sand. As long as the temperatures are OK (floor in the low 90's as measured by a digital thermometer with a probe), the substrate isn't sand and he's getting his calcium and vitamin D3 supplements he's probably fine.

It's a really good sign that your leo adjusted to his new environment right away and began eating! Sometimes that takes awhile. Leos are crepuscular. Leos tend to be active at dawn and at dusk.

Please share a photo of your new leo and of his enclosure? Do you know how old he is? It would be helpful to know what happened to your other gecko.

May I make some recommendations about supplements?

I bought a flooring that is safe for geckos so they won't ingest sand. In the pictures he is shedding so he looks grey. I have the tank at 90 so he should be ok there. My other gecko which was a crested gecko died from a calcium deficiency. Thanks for getting back to me.

Your leo looks alright in these photos.

Is that a "sand" mat? Is 90 a ground temp as measured by the probe of a digital thermometer? Leos do best with a warm end and a cool end.

What did your deceased crested gecko eat? Were you using any powdered supplements?

These are the supplements I use for my 12 yo leo and for my other geckos. I recommend them too. I would not use anything else. All supplements have varying %s of ingredients.

• Zoo Med's Repti Calcium with D3
• Zoo Med's ReptiVite multivitamins without D3
• (+ NOW plain calcium carbonate from a health foods store for leos 12 mo and younger)

How old is your leo? If you can sex him, the leo is at least 6 months old.

Sexing Leopard Geckos Leopard geckos become sexable at about 6 months old. Males can be distinguished from females by a distinct v-shaped row of pores and by bulges right under the vent.
