New Gecko Keeper to Be from the Oregon Coast

Hi;

Ever since our first trip to Hawaii, I have longed for a Gold Dust Day Gecko. They are so beautiful! I found someone selling theirs on CL last week, and after some back and forth with the current owner, I will be getting 3 supposedly female 1 y/o Gold Dust Day Geckos this coming Saturday. The small photos I saw on the ad on CL show critters that look overweight to me, at least compared to the hundreds of them that I've seen on the Big Island of Hawaii. Since I don't have photos, yet, I'll post them once they're here at home and can get some clear, decent photos of them so you can comment if you wish. They come with their 18"x18"x24" Exoterra viv, some orchids, etc., plus food and supplements.

I come from a background of keeping constrictor snakes--boas, pythons, corn snakes, king snakes, and milk snakes. Currently, I have 3. A 3 y/o lipstick sunglow boa, a carpet python, and a Mexican Black Kingsnake, all female.

We also keep parrots--macaws, a Blue Front Amazon, a Sun Conure, and a Blue Headed Pionus who thinks he's my husband :). A beautiful little red factor canary named Rory also resides with us and sings his beautiful songs, much to our delight.

But my passion is our dogs, of which we have several--all toy breeds: Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, or PomxChihuahua mixes. No, I don't breed them. They're furry family, not a source of income for us....

My husband and I just celebrated our 18th anniversary. We live on the central Oregon coast, and love it here, although all the rain in Winter makes a good excuse for a 3 week vacation to Hawaii every February/March! We own an extra home in Portland, and when it sells (once we get it on the market), we'll purchase a small home on a bit of acreage on the Big Island. We both prefer the cooler, greener, and wetter east side and the more upscale and fertile north coast, so that's where we'll look to make our home.

My husband makes good wages (enough to support all of us--human, furred, feathered, and scaled) as a Unix Engineer/SysAdmin SME. He loves his job for the challenges it brings, and for the ability, as the only Unix SME, to do some creative stuff as well, and serve as the Unix and Linux peeps' "guru"/go-to guy.

I haven't worked since 2000. I am a hobby photographer and jewelry maker, though, and enjoy them very much. But if I had to list a "job" title, it would have to be "Dog and Parrot Slave" :biggrin:

So that's it. It's nice to meet you all, and until my geckos come home, I'm reading through all of the day gecko posts, and learning a lot, since this will be my first time keeping them.

Welcome to GU! I recently got 2 female gold dust day geckos after having one die of old age after 11 years. Interestingly, the 2 I got, though hatched here on the east coast, originate from geckos living in Hawaii as opposed to Madagascar. The breeder who sold them to me told me that they are more friendly and less reclusive than the Madagascar natives and so far he is correct. Another interesting thing is that when I got them, the larger one was chasing the smaller one. I got worried and separated them, but the breeder told me later that he raises them in colonies and they establish a pecking order there. When they are moved to a new environment, they have to go through that process again. I put them together again, and once again, he was correct. For a few weeks, the larger one got most of the basking area and the smaller one hid in the plants, but now they co-exist well and share the basking area. This is in aid of encouraging you to give them a little time if they seem not to get along initially.

What? Did I give out TMI, again? *grins* Well, it said to introduce myself, so I did. I hope no one got bored reading more than a paragraph or two! LOL!

I was raised in Vernonia, so am well acquainted with the north coast, since we visited almost every weekend. I got my love of the ocean from my dad :). From Astoria/Warrenton to Cape Lookout for Summer vacations every year, I feel like I know that area well--and love it, although I can't say I like Seaside so much. Toooooo touristy in an east coast kinda way. Of course, now Cannon Beach, which used to be my favorite town, has got to be much the same way--but we still love to visit Ecola State Park for the wonderful views :).

Anyway, I think you live in a beautiful area, and looking at your signature, it's obvious that you love the beach as much as I do!
