Hello, I have stalked this site a bit before joining because the last thing I need is another way to procrastinate, but here I am! I adopted a leopard gecko earlier this year and while he was in good shape, his habitat was lacking despite the good intentions of his previous family. Lovely people, perhaps not the loveliest reptile owners.
Espen (whom I will reference as he, but currently has an unknown gender) came to me in good weight, but was missing toes (never had seen a humid hide) and only had a ten gallon tank (which I understand is the minimum, but for animals where it is acceptable and safe, I try to give them as much space as is beneficial). I made him a humid hide from a Tupperware container ASAP, which helped with that shed immensely. No more lost toes!
So, after a while of saving up for an upgrade, I secured a 40 gallon breeder, several hides (a snazzy humid hide among others), a new UTH with a thermostat (heats about a third of the bottom), and made some of my own plant decorations (my sister designed, I made, much cheaper than plants at pet stores). I did quite a bit of research because I was afraid perhaps it would be too much space, but seeing as he was very active in his tiny tank at night, I decided it would be a safe bet. I had a 20 gallon long with a UTH from a previous pet as a back up in case this one didn't work.
Espen, who had always been a vigorous eater, refused food for a week but has recently returned to a more regular schedule. He explores lots after the lights go out, has a favorite hide (alas the one with no peek-holes), and is doing really well overall, so I would say it is a success! Story over, I wanted to introduce myself as a new member of the community and I hope I can do well by my sassy little friend. Any advice, friendly words of welcome, and conversation is always appreciated.
