Very close call...

I was cleaning my gecko's tank today. While doing this I keep him in a rectangular plastic food container with holes cut in the lid. I line the container with a pillow case so he's nice and comfy. And then I place it on my bed. It took me about an hour or more to thoroughly clean his tank, and all of the hides and fake plants. I do this major cleaning 4 times a year. He has ceramic tile flooring so it doesn't get that dirty.

Anyway, I finished up and went into the bedroom to grab him out of the container and guess what? He wasn't there. I freaked out! He was missing. I immediately grabbed everything off my bedroom floor and put it on the bed. Then I closed the bedroom door, just in case. I figured he couldn't have gone that far. But I was certain he fell off the bed. I then began to pull things out from under the bed, as I store alot of stuff under it. I was so worried. Turns out one corner of the container wasn't sealed completely and he squirmed right out of one corner of the lid.

I yelled downstairs to get my father to come up and help me hunt for him. I didn't know if he had gotten out of the bedroom or not. Anyway, when I came back into the bedroom, he was crawling out from under the corner of my bed, coming out from underneath the bed skirt. He appears to be okay, but he definitely tumbled off my bed to the carpeted floor, which is padded. It's amazing how dumb geckos are that way. No fear. He's walking fine. Doesn't appear to have hurt any of his legs or anything. I'll be watching him closely over the next day or two. I hope he didn't hurt anything. My poor buddy!

Anybody else ever have anything like this happen?

You & Scooby are two of Geckos Unlimited's faithful followers! Thanks so much for sharing, GeckoFanboy!

WHEW! I'm so very HAPPY you found Scooby! Sounds like he had just taken a wee fall off your bed. Perhaps Scooby just bounced off that bedroom's padded carpet. 🙃
About how long was Scooby MIA?
About how far did he fall?

I sincerely hope Scooby's NOT injured.

It had been at least half an hour to 45 minutes since I had gone into my bedroom to check on him in the container. I'm not sure how long he had been out of it and escaped (???). I measured the drop off my bed and it's 28"...a little over 2 feet. The carpet is soft enough that my 5-wheeled computer chair puts dents in it. It's a good thing it wasn't a hard floor. I have NEVER dropped him. I had just taken him out of the tank and into my bedroom for a run around my bed lastnight. I have to be careful and always have to watch him though, as he inevitably heads for the edge and will try to walk off it, but he's never fell under my watch. My biggest worry was he might be trapped or stuck somewhere...or worse, that I'd step on him. I was so upset!

He's acting normal. I've been watching him walk around the tank, and his legs look fine. He's not limping or acting like he's in pain...or trying to hide from me. He trotted out of his moist hide tonight wanting to be fed when I walked in to check him last.

Scooby-Doo was born on 5/9/17...he'll be 8 years old next month.
I bought him on 1/20/18 at a Repticon, at Timonium Fairgrounds, in Baltimore, MD.
He was labeled as a "Tangerine Carrot-Tail Baldy Morph". I paid $120 for him.
He was the most feisty of all the geckos laid out on the table from the dealer.
That's why I picked him. He was very grumpy the first couple of years, but he's a sweety-pie now.
I adore him! He's treated like royalty!

Happens to me on occasion because I'm forgetful and I have a lot (though not nearly as many as before) of geckos. Last week I left a cage open and of course the gecko wasn't there. I know where to look. Within 2 minutes I found her parading around about 5 feet from the cage. A few weeks ago I was in the living room and saw a gecko disappearing up the wall and behind one of my pictures. I had no idea who this was, but it turned out that my gold dust day gecko had somehow gotten out (no door left open or anything) out. We did a little judicious chasing and I was actually able to grab her after about 5 minutes and get her back in the cage. There are other stories as well. Here's an article I wrote about escaped geckos 8 years ago:

If you have a good sized enclosure (mine is 18"x18"x24"), well planted with lots of nice hiding spaces in the plants --I use pothos and it grows well in there-- then it's not difficult. I have no idea how the day gecko I have now and the one that I wrote about in the article got out and during the course of about 20 years that's the only time it happened. They need fruit nectar (I feed them Crested Gecko Diet) and 1/4" crickets. Sometimes they tend to hide and are hard to see.

I saw a couple of them in a Mom'n'Pop pet store one time. They were in a long horizontal tank. I asked the guy about them. For whatever reason, he opened the lid and the geckos took off like lightning across the tank. It was like they just instantly disappeared. I couldn't believe how fast they moved. After I saw that, I was like, there's no way I'd want to deal with that when opening a tank up. I think they're really beautiful, but I love my low-maintenance leo.
